psychosaffa,

I found a set of plans for a Porter sometime back made from Depron. I will check my computer at home and see if I still have them.

Don't remember where I found them though.

Not really a plan... just an idea for materials:

I recently bought a bunch of kitchen cabinets,... they are packaged in cardboard boxes then "banded" with plastic strapping. This stuff is super strong, makes terrific hinges. You could probably dumpster-dive the local hardware store or electronics store and get a lifetime supply. Comes in all kinds of colors too...

warhead,

How do you attach them for hinges? I often thought that it would be a great material for stiffening wings and fuses, but never thought about using them as hinges.

1) cut plastic straps into 1"-1.5" long pieces
2) fold pieces in half (the "hinge")
3) poke a few holes in each half so glue can penetrate through the plastic
4) epoxy half in the wing and half into the control surface

I've been using these for a while as an cheap alternative to
carbon stiffeners for Depron/foamies. Form them i L shape
glue to a edge. Not as stiff as carbon but more than enough
for my planes.

BTW: They are called Polypropylene straps (PP-straps for short) http://www.signorpolymers.net

Not as stiff as carbon, but have you ever tried to stretch or tear one by hand? Impossible. For being "free", you just can't beat them.

Thanks Warhead and Floey. What a great idea! I will be going to this new (free) material for some hinges and wing protection/reinforcement on my next build. Wonderful!

I've used them as combined wing stiffener and protection
for up to 700mm wingspan, AUW weight ~250g (floatplane)

jchabarria,

There are a lot of full fuse designs, but more profiles because they are easier. Look thru the links at the beginning of the thread most of the plans are posted there.
