Re-inventing /modding Thunder tiger's P-51D Mustang

Hiya all, well with the season coming up i have decided to try my luck with a foam kit i bought last year but never started on.

Its Thunder Tiger's P-51D.. I will make it with the standard 370 engine, so no OBL for me yet...

of course when i opened the Kit, as a scale modeller i was pleased but not overly pleased! LOL

so i have begun modding the plane....

first i hated the enclosed cowl exhausts which were plainly incorrect and UGLY so i redid them using some milliput and plastic tubing... Also.. no Pilot! so i got the Tamiya WWII Ace and decided to milliput him too, cut him in half and then find a nice comfy spot for him in my P-51... (talking about switching sides LOL!!)

his arms still have to be done... cannot make an entire scale cockpit due to weight and space restrictions..

will put a scratch built gunsight up too...

well heres the preliminary result for you to enjoy.. I will try to post some updates... still not sure wether to start installing retracteables, its a fairly small foamie !! we'll see...

Added some riveting and panel lines, and made the pilot look more like a WWIIUSAAF aviator by giving him B-8 Goggles and doing some more work on his A-11 flight helmet.. and added arms...

test fitting....

just a test fit...

looking ok in my view...

only thing is, it seems the prop shaft has a little inclination to the left, looking from the front... so from the pilot's view to the right... now if the prop would be spinning from right to left (pilots view), thats ok.. at least thats what i remember from my fuel days...

however i think the thing spins from left to right..... so i am not sure wether ill have to counteract this with rudder should i fly the thing one day...

anyone know about this ??

enjoy the pics...

Based on the photos, the prop will spin clockwise as seen by the pilot. This usually will dictate a small amount of right thrust, again as seen by the pilot. Typically, there should probably be a small amount of down thrust also.

Thanx Tony! that helps a lot!! guess i did it right after all... but ill see that when i will test run the engine as soon as i have gotten a lipo pack and speed controller. the only disadvantage is that it comes with the choice of either fixed
gear, or "retracted'" ie no gear...

Well... she is beginning to look like a Mustang!

Kept the invasion stripes irregular, just like they were during D-day and shortly after.

hope you like the progress...

Its beginning to look like something !!

Final version (nose art, registry etc) will be posted in the show your electric warbirds section......

putting the retracts in was a tough one, and cleaning my attic of all the foam stuff spread by the dremel when making the bays also was quite the job LOL..

but well, its worth it... from this :

Thanx for the compliment!!!

The rudder linkage needs to be done and i am waiting for a brushed esc so
she has not maidened yet, and about the time it took to get to this stage...

I use Tamiya weathering for all my kits, the gunpowder stripes are the oil stain colour you get with set: D

well..... i have just too many hobbies

Re-enactment/living history, model building/ RC flight..

Next to maiden is my PZ bf109 G of which you can find a pic in the 109 thread...

Just had an FSK corsair crash, the little bugger died....

We'll see how this will fly when she is done...
