New Wing Suggestions For A Slow Stick Fuselage

This could fit in several different forums so I thought this one might be the best.

I have a Slow Stick and have been following the various SS threads. I got the SS for general putting around and maybe as an AP platform. The problem I have is the SS doesn't like the wind with the stock wing and it blows here most everyday at least 5-10mph which makes the stock wing useless. So what I am looking for are some suggestions for a new wing that can handle the wind better.

I am an experienced builder and have all the shop toys for scratchbuilding balsa, fan fold foam or hotwiring wing cores. I need some suggestions or links for a new wing be it whatever material.

I am aware of the offerings of Steelhead and Stevens Aero and the SSX but looking to see what I could do from scratch. I have a bunch of old plans from some balsa trainers I could probably use but wanted to see what youse guys might suggest.

Rick

Edited: I am not ruling out any other kit wings or built wings. Any suggestions are appreciated.

not sure if a new wing would help with wind. I have found that weight helps, but obv that will be a problem with the SS.

Try a WingDragon wing. Semi-symetrical layout. Fits right on SS fuse by bringing the wing mounts closer together . Great windy day setup and for AP duties. Good wind penatration but still retains the SS's floaty'ness .

woops...you wanted to scratch build a wing?!! Perhaps you could hot wire some foam like Steelheads wings or fab a built up wing using foam sandwiching techniques .

Thanks Spar,

Maybe I need to edit my posting. I am not ruling out any "store bought" wing kits or molded. Doesn't the WD have two different wings, maybe one with ailerons and one without? BTW I already have an Easy Star so I would be looking for something with flying characteristics a bit different.

Thanks for the info. I had actually been looking at the Magpie wing this morning.

HobbyPeople sells the Wasp, for about $23. and it has some nice wings for ailerons or not, plus all the rest of the plane for parts.
I've seen a couple different guys use this wing on a SlowStick to fly better in the wind.

I have used a easystar wing on a slowstick before. Good in wind but is not as floaty as the SS wing.

Just tape some Blucore, or something similar, on the bottom of the stock wing. Makes a great wind penetrating wing. Quick, simple, and if you don't like it, just take it off.

I think you should just start cutting some odd wings and see what they do. Whatever happens will be fun and exciting. Try everything you can think of. 3D style wing, sailing wing, Delta/jet style. May have to consider different power plants though.

I'm currently experimenting on a SS stock wing trying different things. If it never works the way I want I can replace the wing pretty cheap and start again.

I have seen a posting on that. I have thought of getting another ES wing to put the aileron mod on. My be a hoot.

I actually traced the wing out on some Bluecor to try that but haven't gotten to it yet. I also have a big roll of doculam I may try on the wing bottom. As you mentioned that would be a quick and simple project.

Thanks Bill

I am considering lots of those ideas as well as a KF3 wing used by Tony on his Bluebaby. The nice thing about the SS fuse is it's versatility in trying all of these ideas. I really enjoy building and tinkering. This is right up my alley.

That's what's keeping me interested in the SS right now myself.

BTW Bill, I made it by Walmart and found the sling shot straps near the paint ball guns in sporting goods. They do make very nice prop saver rings. I cut mine using "The Chopper" which looks like a small paper cutter with a single edge razor blade in it. The Chopper is also great for making precision cuts in balsa.
