Telemetry options

Someone else joking suggested a poll, so I figure why not do it.
Here's the question:
Would you rather have
1. a standalone telemetry module with its own LCD display small
enough to carry with you (possibly clips onto Tx or Tx tray), monitors
only your own plane's XPS Tx/Rx pair, and has user settable audible
threshhold alerts for various values such as Rx battery voltage and signal
strength.
or
2. a laptop based telemetry option that can do all of the above and is
able to monitor every XPS system at the field and do everything else
the XPD does?

Ian I was doing the same thing but you got it first. I think you should have another 2 options:

-both
-none

Why will there be no recording available no the stand-alone telemetry option?

What's wrong with writing the data to a removable flash memory card for later analysis on a PC?

Why "either/or" and not "both"?

I voted "both". But I also like the option of having the ability to record on the stand alone unit and download via either a memcard or USB port. In that case I would just want the stand alone module.

Pat I am thinking exactly the same with you. However, it will be pretty cool to be able to monitor in real time what pilots are doing during competitions etc, don't you think? And overlay all that on the actual video footage!

Yes, that would be nice. But on those days when I get my Slow Stick way up to spec height, I want to be able to look down at the screen and see how high I am.

SD cards are about $5 per GB which should be good for many hours of recording. So a stand-alone unit with recording capability to SD (in FAT format that can be easily read back on a PC) would be my choice.

But that would mean new plastic since the cases are already done. But your suggestion is a good compromise.

most exalted one
Unless cost is clear I cannot express an opinion as I definitely am one without unlimited resources. These polls are always faulty if $'s aren't taken into account.Of course a standalone unit giving me everything possible without a laptop at the same price as a plug in to laptop unit would be a choice, but I don't believe a unit can be produced with display, audio, etc as cheaply as a USB plug-in to a laptop.

A lot of people will want standalone but not be willing to pay $499 for it!

You can call me FANBOY!
I kind of prefer the standalone concept personally but would like to see the software available for a PDA also even if the feature set is limited compared the the PC version. That way you could use it as a real time monitor at the flight line and is easier to transport. Would be nice but agree that I dont want to have to take my laptop with me all the time.
