Question

Possible to use gyro for roll damping on delta wing a/c?

I was wondering if it's possible to use a gyro to dampen roll oscillations on a delta wing foamie. I'm not really sure how gyros are connected to servos, but this case seems tricky because roll is controlled by elevons instead of a single aileron channel. I have a Spektrum DX6i transmitter. Is this possible, and if so, what's a good, light gyro to use for this purpose?

Yes its possible... Results will vary depending on the gyro chosen to attempt it.

You would have to use an on-board mixer for the elevons instead of using TX mixing. The Gyro would go between the RX (on the aileron channel lead) and the mixer.

TX mixing would cause all kinds of trouble trying to make the gyro work.

Best gyro for planes is the GWS PG-03 because you can trim it neutral on the ground; most heli gyros you can't trim until the model is free to move, which is OK for a heli but will crash a plane.

You need the on-board vtail mixer, the gyro goes in the aileron channel of that.

Note... some stuff may not be compatible with Spektrum...
Spektrum sends the servo positioning to all servos virtually simultaneously. If the on-board mixer expects the sequential positioning normal for FM systems... it might get confused when its in the Spektrum system.

Fortunately... there's some cheap mixers... about $12 for the GWS one. So its a relatively cheap experiment.

Just a heads-up on gyros. I got an Ikarus Micro-Gyro and it croaked just out of warranty. Thinking that was probably just a fluke, I got another one and it did the same thing. Neither gyro had ever been crashed.

Same here with the Ikarus gyro. Just a small point with the delta. If the rudder/fin area is to small, it will oscilate. Sort of a Dutch roll. With the nose high, the wing blankets the rudder/s.

Any plane will dutch roll at some speed + power combination... Usually low speed, high power, such as trying for too steep a climb at take-off. (its a stall warning in that case)

GWS gyros and Canterbury Sailplanes Digimix v-tail mixers both work fine with Spektrum.

As a sidenote and reminder: generally deltas will NOT roll/oscillate/Dutch-roll with proper conical camber. As an extreme and very stable example, consider the Rogallo wing.
