The Quark--22" SAL Glider for Parkzone Receiver Brick

I posted this in the Indoor/Micro forum, but I figured you guys might find it interesting too.

I've made a small SAL glider to use with the very popular Parkzone Cessna 210 electronics. People have been adapting these for us in a ever growing number of interesting models (https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=720179) and I figured it was time to make a glider. The integrated receiver/servo/esc unit weighs in at 6 grams and is about 1"x0.75''x0.25''. The unit retails for $50, but you can usually find them in the F/S forums pretty cheap. ( I got the receiver, tx , battery and charger for $50 shipped from someone who was looking to get rid of their beat-up airframe.)

Basic specs:

b= 22 inches
s= 86 in^2
AUW= 0.9 ounce
w/s= 1.5 oz/ft^2

The wing is made from a piece of 10mm depron, tapered and sanded to AG03 sections. It's pretty stiff, and should be fine for such a light airframe. Hopefully there'll be a break in the wind tomorrow and I can give it some test throws.

Very nice! I have three parkzone/kyosho bricks, and have been thinking of making a small SAL for some time.....

Post a flightreport, please.

(there is a range-issue )

I did two things to beat the range issue.

1. Route the Rx antenna straight up.
2. Build a bi-quad Tx antenna like this:

I figured up what I would need to build one like it today after reading this thread. Just have to find time to get up to the hobby shop and get some Depron to try my hand at shaping wings. I dread that part! Been planning and thinking about this since I got the Cessna months ago, but never got around to it. Leave it to an MIT Kid to get me excited about it again! I should have paid more attention in math class! LOL

Finally, got a chance to give it a go before the sun went down this evening. Just a few javelin tosses, but the results look promising. Nice flat glide and it penetrated well in the light wind. This weekend I'll start trying SAL tosses and see if I can get somebody to take some video.

OK Adam,

First day of the weekend is over and I didn't get to fly at all due to errands and a sick child. Tell me you got to fly and that it flew like a homesick angel! Oh yeah, where's that video? Don't hold out on us man! Help a brother out. I need a fix! Show me something flying! LOL

good and bad news.

The wind finally calmed down enough to give it some harder tosses and it flies extremely well. I was flying in a small courtyard in front of my apartment, probably 40x40' with trees on all sides, and I was able to do several circuits off a gentle SAL toss. Bad news, I dorked it on an ugly throw and cracked the pod loose. By the time I got it fixed, the sun was down and any hope of videos was gone.

I'll be bringing it to my grandmother's house tomorrow to keep me entertained during the easter festivities, and I'll make sure to get one of the family members to take some video

Well rats!

Glad it flew well but sorry ya dorked it. I'll be finding some time tomorrow to get up to the shop for some depron and then re-reading that article on shaping wings. If the wind doesn't come up until later, I will definitely satifies my own urges and chunk the Skeeter around a bit but I can't wait to see how that little thing flies. It would be great to have something that small in my truck for lunch break relaxation! Good luck and happy thermal hunting!

Very cool. I wonder if it's small enough to fly indoors? Of course that would mean no more "bad weather" excuses

Brian

BTW does Depron sand easily?

Indoors? Interesting concept. A large gymnasium, several space heaters pointing straight up and a couple of small fans at each end of th gym. An indoor Thermal field!

Adam? What did you do with the motor? Did you just snip the wires or what?
