Monthan Air force Base Bone yard

I got the bright idea today at lunch and thought I would use Google maps to look at the Monthan Air force Base Bone yard.

And I happened to find, what I think is a Shooting Star?...but am not to sure.

Yeah, I could probably research there database...but hey..it's lunch...not brain surgery

Anyone else have a clue?

Kinda looks like either a T-33, or a F-89 Scorpion.

I sure would like one of those Tomcats as my personal private aircraft.

I believe it's a T-33. The tip tanks look to be large and fixed to the wing tips, instead of small and hanging underneath like an F-80. The F-89 had more chord in the wing, and a stabilizer that was high on the tail. You can see the shadow from the vertical tail in the photo, so it's pretty certain that it's not an F-89.

Yes, you are correct. It can't be a F-89.

I still want a Tomcat though.

Maintenance nightmare. I'd rather have a Scooter. Chino has some they're getting ready to fly. http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ac/a-4.htm

Maybe a two-seater A-4.

I was thinking of something for me and the wifey to go to Myrtle Beach on the weekends.

If you will center the T-33 above on Google Earth, zoom back a touch then travel on a 45 degree line to the SW you will run over the Pima Air & Spacemuseum. There is a T-33 and an F-89 parked almost next to each other. Makes seeing the diffs real easy

My understanding is it took 50 hours of maintenance for every hour in the air to keep Tomcats flying.

That's where the Lockheed D-21 drone was accidently discovered by the public.

http://www.wvi.com/~sr71webmaster/d21~1.htm

A tarp came loose over one and the wind blew it partway off. A guy taking a tour said "hey-what's this?" and took pix of it. The missions they flew are still secret.

You can get one of these for around $500k.

You can get a Czech MiG-21 for as little as $40K. Of course, you'd have to disarm it and disable the ejection seat, and you'd be restricted as to where and when you could fly it...

I was on an ABDR exercise at DM back in the 80's, and they gave us a bus tour of the bone yard. We drove by the line of D-21's no tarps, no covers, no attempt to hide them. They were all lined up just like anything else out there. The funny thing is my Top Secret training kicked in and the little voice in my mind said I'm not supposed to know anything about those things, so to this day I cannot tell you how many of them were in that line up, I didn't want to know.
