Well I'm totally confused after reading all this. I live in the U.S.. I'm a private pilot and also have a light sport repairman inspection authorization. From what I have read here, it sounds like it is basically illegal in the U.S. to fly anything of any weight while using FPV goggles because that would make it a UAV.
I guess the good news is that the FAA is broke and has serious problems. I know when the Light Sport Rule was first passed, a lot of people with unregistered ultralights were worried the FAA was going to raid small airports and take the planes. That didn't happen, and I'm even seeing people advertising overweight unregistered ultralights for sale. Bottom line, like everything in aviation in the U.S., the FAA wants to get into your wallet.
Hopefully the worst that will happen is the FAA will try to regulate UAV,FPV. Which will be a good thing, because some of the videos on youtube show people doing really stupid things with FPV over populated areas. Then we will have some definition as to what exactly constitutes an UAV.
If some sort of license is eventually offered, I will be first in line....with my wallet out.

I've made a FAQ for my country:

Q: Are UAVs legal in Portugal?
Yes.

end.

This does not surprise me in the least. Many of the top managers in the agency are lawyers, including the COO and AVS-1. I work for the FAA in a small field facility, and they like to use what we call the "big paintbrush theory"; that is, if it applies to a Level 12 running a million operations a year, it applies to a Level 5 running 60,000 operations a year. I fully expected the powers-that-be to use the same approach for UAS operations. Common sense is completely absent from many of the decisions that filter down through the ATO.

Tony

PS: Please don't mistake the tone of my message. I am grateful for the job I have, but I do at times get very frustrated at the decisions of upper management.

I have a question. Mostly just to cut my research time. I've already spent quite a number of hours researching the regs topic. I can find US, UK, CA, Oz, no prob.

Can anybody point me in a direction where I might find a synopsis of commercial UAV regs in the countries of western Europe? Belgium, France, Spain, Italy, Netherlands are my primary focus. Germany too.

Thanks.

ATO Joke

I keep hearing that the woman that heads ATO was supposed to leave after she trained her replacement. When I hear itů I usually say, how long does it take to teach someone how to ride a broom?

Under publications, I find a "Concept for UAS certification" - http://www.eurocae.net/publications/...ions-list.html

Doesn't sound like something that is in place.

Wait a sec - here - another working group - WG-73 UAV Systems (UAS)
http://www.eurocae.net/working-group.../42-wg-73.html

Which gives me a link to "more publications" here: http://www.eurocae.net/working-group...-june2011.html

That will take some time to digest.

Thanks, talk to ya later.
