Kit/Plan Fun Build - Guillow's DH4

Thought I'd join in the fun with this one.
It's a 27" span 1964 Guillow's DeHavilland 4 Biplane.
Kit #205 - no longer produced. This one came off E-bay.
I love the look of this plane - it looks like a big old Mack truck with wings
I saw a restored one in a magazine recently done in bergundy red & white - What a stunner!
I started it yesterday and have the fuselage mostly framed.

As for what's going in it? I have no idea yet.
Along these lines probably.

Brushless outrunner
7.4V 800ma/hr lipo
5 gram servo's
Corona 4ch synth Rx
6" prop (scale is a 6" 4 blade)

Flight characteristics Im after is a stable, docile flyer that's all.

This should keep me busy for a week or two

I have this kit in my stash & often thought of building it-glad to see you are doing more than thinking about it! Should be a winner Phil-thanks for sharing.

Good afternoon Phil,
You just brought me down memory lane, that was my first Guillow's kit.
Built it in '78 as a FF.
Best of luck with her,

Hey Phil:

Another unique and interesting guillow's conversion. Should be a piece of cake after the B-17 and PBY... though the small size and need to keep it light should add an element of challege! I have the Rumpler C-5 of similar size stashed away and am looking forward to seeing how you do this conversion. Looks like you are off to a fast start and I am sure that you will have another nice bird soon!

Hey Phil,

Nice catch! I built the Rumpler for FF from the same series as a teenager back in the '70s. Wish I could find one of those kits today! Keep on posting...

Thanks for the interest & well wishes chaps.
This one is quite a fun little build.
I've hacked off a lot of 'spare' timber so far & I could take off a lot more.
However I'm not a big fan of nano-lite models, they have to be able to ground loop & not break. That's about the only stipulation for me.

I'll look into the varioprop Mark, but at this point I'll stay lightweight and mod later. So will probably get a GWS 6x3 to start with.
I rummaged around last night & found some unused B/L motors.
I'll have to run them on 7.4 volts to see the current draw & decide from there.

I have some old sp350 & G'boxes lying around but one of those takes up the entire front end & pushes the battery well back so that is out of the equation now. Add to that the weight of mounting stick & bracketting it would be a lot of work for the return.

A small outrunner will fix easily onto the firewall and if I need nose weight, I'll upsize the lipo.
Gut feeling tells me such a long nose will give me lots of room to experiment with.

I found a pic of the DH4 I was on about, the colour is off a bit but it shows the idea.
It's actually maroon/bergundy with silver wings.
Anyhow, I hope to get a bit more done tonight.

A few more pics.
Motor is a a re-wound BP2408-21.
It was originally re-wound to swing a 5x3 on 3S.
Now i'll try a 6x3 or 6x4 on 2S. I expect to have to re-wind it again to suit but that only takes me an hour nowadays (done many of 'em before)
Ideally about 8 amps WOTshould give me a good flight time/power ratio
Battery will sit on a plate above the motor, ESC sits directly behind motor - all very handy indeed.

Rudder/elevator servos will go in later, I'll use them to assist CG balance.

Trying to use up what I have around the shop on this one.

Off to bed now...zzzzz

Very nice! These conversions are really fun to do, I will have to do some more of them soon.

I still have the plans from the one I built about 10 years ago, and have considered scratching a new one, but with a box frame fuse and upper formers.

Got a little more done last night.
Pics to come later.
Did the hatch for the battery. Thought I'd need some grease & shoe horn but got it sorted in the end.
I calc'd the wing area to be 189 square inches on this plane! (27" span x 3.5" chord x 2 wings)
That is amazing when you think that the Guillow's Liberator is 190 sq in !!
So if this weighs an even 10 oz's in the air, the wing loading is around 7.6 oz/ft2
That should be quite a floater I'd expect.
With WOT 8 amps@7.0V = 56 Watts
That would equate to around 90W per lb if my maths are right.

Slightly off-scale but who cares.
It will be interesting to see if the gyrosopic effect of the bell motor offsets the P factor (left hand drift at take-off) of the prop.
With this much power it may be very tricky.
