Uncle Willies seems to like my Shinden from the Build Off
Hi everyone
Last night I was checking out Ebay to see if someone was selling anything I just couldnīt live without And because Iīve always wanted a rare japanese magazine featuring the Kyushu J7W1 Shinden I did a search for this. No luck with the magazine, but several plastic kits emerged and one guy selling plans for a 62" radio controlled Shinden. Out of curiosity I took a look at the plans and since I hadnīt seen this model before I followed the Youtube link to "See this Plane fly on Youtube". And to my great surprise I was looking at my own video of my Shinden that I designed for the First Build Off competition Not knowing this Uncle Willies I did an internet search and found his website with the same Shinden plan and another link to my Shinden. Well, this Uncle Willies hasnīt copied my plan or anything but I would have preferred if he had written a small remark stating that the model in the video is NOT the one heīs selling plans for. I donīt know if he has the legal rights to the 62" Shinden plan, but it sure is funny with all his disclaimers and then he points people to a video of my Shinden Design. None of the links claim that the plan he is selling is the one in the video so he has his a... covered, but Iīm sure that even though the to planes are two different sizes, many people will think that they are buying plans for my design. I havnīt contacted Uncle Willies yet, because I wanted to hear you guys first, but from what Iīve read about Uncle Willies in other threads it seems like a lost course to get this guy to act in a decent way. There have been several threads in various places about his sale of plans to which he does not have the rights.
If he were re-hosting your video you would have a copyright beef against him but if all he's done is linked to Youtube where you posted it, I don't think there's anythonng to do but shrug and forget about it. Although you could take down the Youtube video, thus screwing up his link, and put it up again under a slightly different guise with a prominent notice saying "this has nothing whatsoever with Uncle Willie's and any SHinden model plans he may sell are not of this particular model". |

Iīll modify the video description and make it perfectly clear that my Shinden is not the one Uncle Willies is selling plans for. Cheers, Michael Hammer, Hammer Models |

I too am an eBay addict, and a few months ago I emailed Uncle Willies regarding some particulars about a plan. What I got in reply was a long nonsensical rant about being homeless and living in his car and having thousands of plans and having no way to know what was in them, etc, etc. Figured the guy was a kook and left him alone. Not surprised to find his ethics lacking, I think he is a few fries short of a happy meal.
He's not worth your trouble, Mike, your Shinden speaks for itself. Cheers, Jeff |

In Alaska we would have called Uncle Willie a "shyster." Someone who's not quite on the up-and-up, but too sneaky to get caught.

Iīll stay well clear of this "Shyster"
BTW. I took a look at the links where most of the people who watch the video come from. And quite a lot of "clicks" come from this korean site I think I prefer to have my Shinden associated with cute young korean schoolgirls than with Uncle Willies. Call me old fashioned - Michael Hammer, Hammer Models |

Welcome to the hazy, crazy world of "Intellectual property management in the age of the internet" I can understand your concern about how your video is being used. Imagine how "Grape Stomp Lady" must feel when she realizes that the video of her mishap is one of the most viewed on YouTube, yet she can't find a job in commercial broadcasting because she's "that Grape Stomp Lady from YouTube, right?"
I'm surprised no one's gone after "Uncle Willy" for copyright infringement. |
