What to use instead of piano wire?

My LHS has music (piano) wire, but it's incredibly expensive for what it is. Is there any way I can find this stuff (or something comparable) at Home Depot or elsewhere locally?

Thanks!

Yes, Home Depot and Lowe's sell steel wire, but the smallest size they have is 1/8".

Yeah, I've seen that but it's WAY too heavy/large. Any other suggestions?

It seems to me we throw away at least one plastic hanger every few months from my wife's side of the closet, with some interesting springs, wire for landing gears, etc. I haven't tried any of it yet, but it appears to be much stiffer than coat-hanger wire. I'll salvage some of the wire from the next one she discards to see if it's any good for landing gear material.

Cheers,

H/D and Lowes have flagging stakes...18" steel wire with little orange flags on the top for marking sprinler line and building layouts. come in 10's,25's and 100's dirt cheep. They are a little thicker than standard push rods but work fine...pld
Sorry about the spelling...broken wrist...flew without aircraft! It's o.k. though...the ground stopped me.

poweredlawndart,

Love your sense of humour (english spelling !).

I was idly reading the message with a mouthful of coffee and ended up spraying the computer screen & half the office whilst trying desperately not to laugh (I failed miserably !!!!!!!!!!!!)

Music wire is high-tensile steel - coat hanger or other cheap wire will bend much more easily.

You can buy piano wire from music shops, but I've no idea if its cheaper than buying it from a hobby shop - but there's usually a big mark up on that sort of thing!

I used to get bulk piano wire from the local hardware store. Like Ace hardware or True Value. By the way what diameter are you looking for?

Tried a pair of the Home Depot flagging wires for push rods in a scratch built Beaver today (GWS size) They are 15" long and measure .062 (1/16") in dia.
Softer and easier to bend than piano wire but work fine...Enjoy..PLD

If it flies I love it!
Use 2 or 3mm carbon tubes for the majority of the control rod length and glue into the ends a small piece of wire to attach to the servo and control horn. Stiffer, lighter, better. http://www.kitebuilder.com/catalog/p...bb02e556ee0f41

Stainless Steel welding wire comes in several sizes. The Handlaunch guys use it a lot. Support it in tubes , like those Red Coffee stir sticks. I use .025 for smaller planes and .045 for larger. Sometimes welding shops will give you some for FREE ! They can't use all thats on a spool.

Also Stainless Leader wire for Deep Sea fishing can be used and it uncoils straight , and is a little harder than welding wire.

Welding Rod

Welding supply stores sell bare steel welding rod in 3 foot lengths for oxy/fuel and TIG welding in a number of sizes from 1/32 up. It is not a stiff as music wire, but for a light foamy it holds up just fine. It is sold by the pound and a pound is nearly a lifetime supply for foamies.

I have used 1//8 and 3/16.
