Tail dragger take off question
I have got a 2m piper cub and was wandering, if its best to apply a tiny amount of up elevator to keep the nose up or should i just let her fly off the deck.
The plane is well trimmed |

For my flying field (dirt runway), it`s full up to taxi out and none to take off.

Depends on how much power you have. If you got plenty of power, get it on the runway, line it up and gun the hell out of it. It will take off promptly. On the other hand, if you are down on the power curve, then get rolling, get the tail up, then the speed up and then up elevator to take off. Stay off the rudder, as cubs are ground loop sensitive (big rudders).

On taildraggers, I always apply up elevator during the initial taxi, and once it gets up a little speed, I release the elevator. Helps keeping the plane running straight until rotation and ROG.

great stuff guys
I always tended to hold up elevator( a little) just until lift off, which looked rather crap scale wise. Ill try it |

Holding up elevator for too long tends to make your model take off before it's really got enough flying speed. With my Cub I hold up elevator until it gets rolling -- just to hold the tail down and stop it nosing over -- then I let the elevator go to neutral as the speed builds up. The tail then almost immediately lifts off and, when the plane achieves flying speed, it will take off by itself and, because it's at flying speed, it will respond nicely to aileron or whatever control is necessary.
