As a follow up to your suggestion I went to Lonestar Models website looking for the widest balsa sheets avaible only to find that they had a fire the day before Thanksgiving and they are out of business for the short term. Devastating news as they were my main source for all my wood. Further checking I found National Balsa, they have balsa up 12" wide so that is a good place to start. The lower cabin roof has a compound curve so balsa may be easier to work with than ply. Doug |

Tinknocker,
A fire at a balsa wood warehouse, that must have been quite a fire!! I've used national balsa, mostly for bass, I've been fairly happy with it. I'm building a 1/35 scale DD, like the Fletcher, it's 10'6" long, see post. My planking is not neat and clean like yours at all, but in my case it's going to be sanded down and covered anyway. Cap |

Thanks Pete I put 3/4 oz glass on the roof with two coats of epoxy. Still needs some sanding before the prime goes on. Hope the seam behaves itself and stays hidden. If not the next step is Bondo. So far this build has been a lot of work but also a lot of fun and very satisifying.

Tinknocker if you glassed that seam in the cabin top you probably won't have any trouble with it. I've used bondo on mine and it still cracked. I thought about glassing it but it's too much trouble now that the boat is done. Actually once it's painted even if it cracks under the glass it won't show.I doubt the glass would crack so that was a good thing to do.

TINKNOCKER-I thought I would post some pictures of a Sterling 63’ Motor Yacht that was at the Toledo Expo last year. It isn’t the model of the yacht , which I might add was a great looking job, that impressed me but the wicker furniture that was on the back deck. Yes I know every one will say ,Oh that’s doll house furniture, I say nay, nay!! Wrong scale at I/12th for doll house furniture, this stuff was the perfect scale. And the detail of the furniture is way better than I have seen in the doll house furniture stores I venture into. Really looks like it should be there.

KYLEWP thanks from the comments. That is what keeps me on track. I know what you mean about trying to buy one already built. They are out of the question for me also so the only thing was to build it this way. So far it has been a blast.

Pete
Glassing the roof was not too bad using the light weight cloth. I got some fisheye in the second coat which I will sand out. The upper cabin roof is now in place so tommorow it will get shaped then it too will be glassed. One of these days I will have to start painting the hull and stain the decks, but then things really slow down. You know how that goes put on a coat then let it dry overnight, then nothing gets done. Oh well it is part of the process. Doug |
