RC18T woohooo!!

I bought a micro-T a few months ago on a whim, my first RC car since I was a kid.
What a fun little car.

FF>> three months and I'm ripping around the parking lot at lunch with an 18t..
Wow, I'm having fun with this car. I’ve been keeping it on the road only. The pins are completely worn off the tires; which has been working well for drifting on the damp road.

Although I was impressed with the stock performance I have moved to a brushless/li-po set-up.

Here is were it’s at:

RC18T stock chassis, suspension
CC Mamba 6800kv, w/mamba 25 esc
Stock pinion (15t?) w/ 60t spur
2cell max amp 1550 lip-po's

I shimmed the difs. straight out of the box and have had no issues; even with the mamba/li-po’s. The 6800kv motor makes good torque and I think I’ll go back to the stock spur gear for more top end.

?’s

Anyone have suggestions for street tires. Foams maybe?

Drifting is fun, but it is not what I’m really interested in. I’m looking for as much traction as possible. Which leads to ? #2.

What suspension changes/ after market suspensions are working well for a t on the road?

I look FWD to talking more about these fun cars.

sweet, er, foams are best for carpet tracks, er, the MT tires grip good onroad, BUT I have only tested it out with the stock motor, so far I have
metal diff gears F & R
Gear Cover
AL threaded shocks F & R (GREAT, BARELY LEAK A DROP OF OIL AFTER BASHING LIKE CRAZY!!!!!!!)
Proline Dirt Hawgz F & R ties
RPM WIDE BUMPER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Home Made Track
sister to race against
er, watin for The Toyz to get the DP Draglink back in stock!!!!!!! they have been having probs with their presses... , workin on a CD (center diff) for my 18MT>18T debating brushless, IDK, hard to say, they are a ton of fun

Look on Tower or Atomic mods for "Street Meats" which offer on-road tread pattern and slightly harder compound (longer life). Even with stiffer rubber, they should get much better on road traction than the stock pin treads.

They should fit any of the 1/18 scale cars.

Please explain how you shim the diffs.

Rex

Thanks for the tire input. I bought some Pro line Road rage tires. I haven’t mounted them because the stock pin tires are worn down to slicks and are hooking up really well! I can't imagine the PL RR's working any better.

I will be installing an MIP super dif. at the rear of my rig tonight. If I can figure it out I’ll put up some shots of were the shims go.

or download this PDF. (its large)

Page 6 shows an explosion of the dif.

The shims go on part #21027 (the short side) before the bearing (part #21106)
the result is the gear mesh between the dif.s ring and pinion are tightened. do not add to many or they will bind and fail.

can anyone suggest a servo saver upgrade?

The stock servo saver lets my buggy get waaaaayyy tooooooo wiiiiiiddddee in the turns at speed because it's just too loose.

Do people get better servo savers, or do they just use servo arms with upgraded MG servos?

er, ya, I agree. that is a pain in the rear, especally at HIGH SPEEDS............. (crash), er, DP draglink (last time I checked out of stock until the end of this month, heard DP was gettin (ha, er, more like not)) er, until then, try tightinin everythin up, kindof, not much you can do other than maybe make a piece of plastic that cuts out SOME of the slop???? eh, whatcha think of the track, it is 45 secs in so there is NO confusion, this is SADLY NOT MY TRACK
Rc18T/B Climber (2 min 7 sec)

I actually bought a bigger hitec (not quite standard size) high torque servo for mine. Mounted it vertically by cutting a slot in the chassis and ziptied it down. The mounting style plays as a slight servo saver not much, but not much is needed with a brute of a servo and a light little car. Works very well!

Thanks a bunch for the link!!!

Since you have installed the metal diff gears, have you noticed they cause any problems? Are they causing other parts to break or were the plastic diff gears just that cheap?

Thanks!!!

eh, ya, I was at my Aunt and Uncles for thanksgivin, and brang my truck to run since it gets REAL BORRIN there, and installed a new diffie gear in the mornin, and by the end of the day, it was toast, ya, metal is definately a good option, everyone says if you shim a diff with a total of 3 shims it is better, heck, get metal, it is best

yeah, I've gone through a couple since I bought my steel ones. You still need to make sure it's shimed right though.

I found my own solution:
Dis-assemble the stock SS and stretch out the little spring (not too much). This will increase the pressure the spring puts on the saver. Re-assemble and you are ready to go. You could shim the spring instead of stretching it.

However, this didn't really solve my problem of turning too wide at speed. It turns out that there is simply too much slop in the steering system. All of the ball joints are a bit wiggly. The plastic parts are too bendy and the rubber tires are too squishy.

On open, flat pavement the servo saver is not causing the problem. It's just the sloppy steering system causing the problem.

I'll do some expiriments with a titanium turnbuckel set I purchased at ratshack. With the right amount of toe-in on the fronts or possibly more toe-out on the rears will increase steering in-stability and possibly help the buggy turn sharper at speed. I'll let y'all know what I find.
