Aquarius; plans and video


The Aquarius is a redesign of Larry's Capricorn which was a redesign of the Robbe Gemini.

I built the Capricorn first from plans Larry provided on Wattflyer. It is an excellent flying boat and an excellent flying airplane. It is a very large plane so I decided to make a smaller version with some changes to suit me. The resulting plane is the Aquarius. It is a light wing loading plane just like the Capricorn and shares it's flying characteristics. The low speed flying and handling characteristics are outstanding.

I decided to do this plane at this time because it is an all season and all surface machine. It can take off well from land, snow, water, grass or any suitable surface.

Specifications and plans


Specs and plans...in progress

Span = 25"
Length = 28"
AUW = 330 gr (11.6 oz) w/o battery. I use a 1000 mAh 3s

Construction is primarily Bluecor with epp sponsons
1300 kV Blue Wonder with 8040 gws direct drive prop
12A ESC
9 gram servos for the elevons, 5 gram servo for the yaw VT.
Berg 4ch micro receiver
No rudder

The main differences between the Aquarius design and it's "big brother" other than size are the flat sections at the folds in the wing and the yaw VT.

The flats were added for the following reasons:

1) No gaps in the elevons required at the back. Better wing efficiency??
2) Easier to mount the sponsons
3) Easy to hook up the carbon cross braces to the bottom of the side flats.
4) Easy to build, no angle cutting required.
5) The center flat provides a convenient place to mount all of the guts. The battery is going on the bottom, all else on top.

The reasons for the Yaw VT were:

1) Provides yaw (rudder) function on the ground/water as well as in the air
2) Reduces aft weight of rudder and pushrods etc.
3) Reduces overall length...significantly compared to the Capricorn design.
4) Less obvious, but it should provide the yaw performance of a balanced rudder, ie where there is as much rudder below the wing as above.
5) I should be able to use a smaller vertical stabilizer. Less weight, less drag, quicker roll rate etc.

Build details


Build details...in progress.

The wing was single piece cut from Bluecor. 6mm Depron could easily be used instead. Reinforcing tape was added below each fold/joint. The center joints were kiss cut and folded. The outer joints were cut and scraped with a hack saw blade to provide the gap in the joint for folding. Quick and easy. With this technique there is minimal gaps at the joints. Jig it up and glue all the joints at the same time. I used Sumo glue. It expands and fills all of the (very small) gaps at the joints.

EDIT: WHOOPS - Looks like you already mentioned it was a redesign haha silly me!

Great looking plane, looks like she flies well too. I would be most interested in the plans when you post them!

I like the design and the videos are great. I could have some fun on my one acre pond but, they're more boat than plane and they're not real good at either. That's what keeps me from not designing or building one. A Nitro boat about 10 years ago is where I left off with them. Maybe I just don't get it.

Thanks guys!

This is a very fun flying machine and is not very hard to build.

It is one of the most capable fliers I've had. It is fully aerobatic, fast roll rate, flies inverted easily. It does outside loops straight and easier than any thing else I have flown. What makes it fun is that is so controllable yet it is also easy to fly and very forgiving.

Even if you don't plan on flying from water, you'll enjoy flying this ship very much.

Thanks very much Dekan, this one will be in my long term fleet.

The VT is deceptively simple. I drilled a cross hole in the Slofly mount. Put a lag screw through this hole and lagged it to the plywood reinforcing on the nose. This provides the yaw pivot hinge. I replaced the set screw which locks the motor in place with the ball end screw shown in the picture. The ball end screw locks the motor in place and is the control arm for the VT. That's it!

The Yaw VT work really well. I believe a traditional rudder would work very well too instead of the yaw VT.

This build would work very well in EPP. Just add a 40% KF to the bottom. I don't think any other extra reinforcing would be required.

The biggest problem with this design is that (because it is so controllable/predictable/forgiving) it tempts me to do tricks very low to the ground (as you may have noticed in the indoor video) The epp would only add to this temptation.

Thanks Lead, but whats a lag screw? Is it what we brits call a self tapper?

What sort of angles used on the bends?

I fancy having a go at VT...this plane would be a good one to try out on.

Maybe one of the guys could take your drawings, Lead, and do us a "proper" plan..If we all ask nicely....unless you've already got that covered.

Here is a photo of the screw I used.

The center strip is up 2". The wing tips are up 1 1/2".

Better (proper) plans are already covered...should be next week some time. Thanks for asking.
