Build Log
SkyShark 82" P40 (click on "comments" more pictures within thread)
SO SkyShark put their 82" P40 on 1/2 sale for Xmas and i got a Xmas check from family ....There was really no choice in the matter.
The P40 is my wife's favorite plane and i like it too (just not as much as Corsair). Just one look at the plane and knowing skyshark's rep, i had to have it So i logged on and got out the card and put it in the cart. Actually i struggled for a while over the cost of the custom Seria Giants retracts which was more than the air frame. I'm not used to doing retracts and the added cost. I called and talked to Skyshark and they assured me that these retracts were worth it. I finely came to accept that the sale discount almost covered the cost of the retracts so i was still in the "bargin" deal....right? Then I committed. I estimated this whole project to cost $1700-$2000 and of course tried not to admit the $2000 to "her" or myself. So here's the start of my build thread. I've gotten a ways into this now but not so far as to make the build log pointless. Here's how it came from the Postmaster! ImagesView all Images in thread

Building on the P40
Ok, so I got the parts and started to put this BEAST together. One thing i can say about this ARF is that the instructions were obviously done by a modeler. Some of the finer points put into the instructions show this person knew what they were talking about. Also, most of the hardware is of outstanding quality. And the fact they predrilled the hing points for the flaps and alierons is a VERY nice touch. wish that was done on the rudder post as well but it's easy enough to do. And note, this is NOT a plane for a beginner to try to build or fly even as a ARF. Now let's look at some build pictures for details
The build starts with the main wing control surfaces. Here's a tip my friend devin suggested and i worked out. the problem that i always hate is that when mounting control horns, through deep ailerons the screws NEVER line up with the base plate hole. He suggested jiging up something to use my bench top drill press. at first i resisted due to all the curves, nothing was flat or level . but what i did later, with some pushing, i thought to put the wings on a box beside the drill press. then use a bunch of terry cloth towels to prop everything up to make it at least level to the eye. This worked much better than i expected and suggest you try it sometime too ImagesView all Images in thread

I would love to do this with a da-50. Have you mounted the motor yet? How much for the sierra retracts?
