Dassault Rafale C twin EDF

Aeronaut Rafale twin 90mm, my second one. Twin 90mm WeMoTec Midi fans with Kontronic Fun 500-19 motors and twin Kontronic Jazz 80 controllers.

Weight rtf ca. 3.39kg (7.46lbs), power 2000-2600 Watts depending on Lipo setup.

More details on the Aeronaut Rafale here and here, and here:

Thanks It's a sweet flier ...

Installed thrust is around 3.3 kg (7.3 lbs) so the thrust to weight ratio is around 0.9-1.0 .

Kontronic motor thrust data in the WeMoTec Midifan can be found here:

... I built the grey Rafale twin in 2003 and flew it for nine years

It was time to retire it, it had numerous issues:

worn out geartrain on the servos lead to excessive play in the elevons, retracts had accumulated a ton of dust and grime, nosegear steering worn out, electrical wiring started to peel, chipped blades on both fans, one wemotec plastic spinner exploded last week etc.

I took all the electronics out and will hang the nine-years old overflown airframe in the attic

Occasionally twin setups with very lightweight (and thin) composite fuselages tend to resonate a bit at certain rpms, which can be annoying.

I found cotton balls to be very effective at reducing fan noise, vibrations and resonances.

I stuffed the black Rafale full of cottonballs, and it's a lot quieter now in flight

On the last flight of the black Rafale last week it was so smoking hot (new Gens Ace batteries) that one of the wings was flexing (thanks Bruce for the observation)

More precisely, I inspected it later and I found that the wing-to-fuselage joint that was not as rigid as it should have been.

A partial fix was easy enough ... without taking off the back end of the fuse, I used one of those handy very long hysol gun tips to put some more hysol epoxy at the joint between the fuselage former and the fuse itself.

The wing-to-fuse joint is a lot more rigid now

On the next maintenance cycle I will take the back off and add hysol on that side as well...

More wing mount reinforcements ... the wings still keep flexing at high speed (150mph+).

Got a set of these bright inexpensive lights from rcl.

Hopefully the large, bright landing light will be visible during the day, or at least around sundown . I put it on the landing gear (5) channel, so it's off most of the flight ...

For now it's just a test to see if it is visible at all during "normal" flying hours ...
