T-rex 500 Night Flyer *Now with flight Pics*

Welp...Figured I'd show off the T-Rex 500 Night Flyer.

I hacked up an old crashed Lepton canopy. Two 5' sections of rope for the canopy and tail boom, and a 3' section for the skids. A 2S 350 TP pack will power it.

The link below is a thread for how to build your own blades, with the night blades on this heli being near the bottom of page 2. We test hopped the 500 tonight with just the blades, so I just had to get the light rope going.

Tonight finally came the night to get some shots of the 500 at night. It finally warmed up enough at night to go fly the Rex 500. My buddy Dwaine who built the blades brought out his new camera to get some shots. He's still playing with the settings, so we'll be getting better pics in the future.

You can see that we have the Green Ring on the top and the Red on the bottom, this really helps with orientation, that and they're in different diameters too. I like these homemade blades better than the MS blades. They light up the ground better for landing and inverted flight.

Very cool! Do you have any specific details on the blade modifications?

The blades started as MAH 425mm blades. From there my buddy used some copper foil tape as traces that run down the length of the blades. He used surface mount LED's (little tiny buggars) and carfully soldered each joint directly on the blade. The red LED's operate on a lower voltage so he had to use a small resistor to step down the voltage.

We use the red on the bottom of the blades since they are the last to go out as the batteries die. At the root of each blade is a 200 mah Lipo cell and a little 3 pin socket. They use the same type of jumpers as the MS and Align night blades.

I have switched to a 3S pack for the driver, which will make the glow wire brighter so we don't have to leave the shutter open as long for the body to show up so our pictures should improve now....

Very nice. Was it difficult to balance the blades after all the mods?
