Dornier Do335

Alright, not getting started on this till this weekend, but I thought I'd get the ball rolling with some details of the Do335 & a couple of pics of the real thing.

General characteristics
Crew: one, pilot
Length: 13.85 m (45 ft 5 in)
Wingspan: 13.8 m (45 ft 1 in)
Height: 4.55 m (15 ft)
Wing area: 55 m² (592 ft²)
Empty weight: 5,210 kg (11,484 lb)
Max takeoff weight: 8,590 kg (19,500 lb)
Powerplant: 2× Daimler-Benz DB 603A 12-cylinder engines
(1,726 hp, 1,287 kW) each

Performance
Maximum speed: 765 km/h (474 mph)
Combat radius: 1,160 km (721 mi (half load))
Service ceiling: 11,400 m (37,400 ft)

Armament
1 × 30 mm MK 103 cannon
2 × 20 mm MG 151 cannons
Up to 1000 kg (2,200 lb) bombload

Only one Do 335 survives today. The aircraft was the second preproduction Do 335 A-0, designated A-02, with construction number (Werknummer) 240102, and factory radio code registration, or Stammkennzeichen, of VG+PH. The aircraft was assembled at Dornier's plant in Oberpfaffenhofen (southern Germany) on April 16, 1945. It was captured by allied forces at the plant on April 22, 1945. The aircraft was test flown from a grass runway at Oberwiesenfeld, near Munich, to Cherbourg, France while escorted by two P-51's. The Do 335 was easily able to out distance the escorting Mustangs and arrived at Cherbourg 45 minutes before the P-51's. VG+PH was one of two Do 335's to be shipped to the United States aboard the Royal Navy ship HMS Reaper, along with other captured German aircraft, to be used for testing and evaluation under a USAAF program called "Operation Sea Horse." One Do 335, with registration FE-1012, went to the USAAF and was tested in early 1946 at Freeman Field, Indiana. Its fate is a mystery.

JP... This is going to be a great project. I can't wait to see it. I think you are supposed to add it to your hanger which is post #16 (your original post)over in the multi-engine contest thread. At least that is my understanding... Congrats again on a great choice. Bob

Signing on.

This is my favorite WW2 plane ever!

I had started a design of my own, but then a new job came between me and modelling

good luck !

Time for another motto!
Ah, you wanted a safe bet? Last year Pfeil II won the foamies contest, so this time you are going for pfeil I?

Electronics

Specs of my build-

WS 40"
Length 36" (not including spinners)
Target AUW 25 oz.
Projected Wing Area 310 sq. in.

Electronics-

TP2100 3S
Suppo 2212-13 x 2 \max amps each (12)
9 x 5 or 10 x 6 \3 blade props (whichever looks best scale wise)
Suppo 20amp ESC x 2
Tower Pro 5g servo x 2 \ailerons
Tower Pro 9g servo x 2 \rudder & elevator
Micro 05s receiver

I've got everything I need except the 2 motors & 1 ESC, but will order those up tomorrow.

With any luck I'll be able to get started tonight, and post progress soon!

In the not too long distant past People have Built SCALE (as in full Fuselage/wings in Balsa) Do 335's in that same 1:12 size...using twin S400's and Nicad batteries achieving V similar weights. Surely yours could be in the 12 oz range ?

Weight

Bare,

I would definately like to come in lighter than 25oz's , but just adding up the gear I mentioned in post 6 without the props comes out to 11oz. I will also be doing a full fuse & built up wings, but I will be using Elmers foam board. The built up wings is where I am going to have the most trouble & since I only have elmers foam to wrk with they may a little thick(1.75in) I'll have to look around locally & see if I can come up with some thinner foam to skin the wings with.

Wings

I decided to go with the eppler 374 airfoil for my wings just because I was able to find a pic online that I could save & print out easily & it was close to what I wanted as far as properties go. So far I 've just got the ribs for one wing cut out, I still need to cut the spar holes & then on to forming the wing by rolling it to the basic airfoil shape before gluing. I am going to start out just doing one wing to see if I like the results before moving on. Should have one done tonight........

Great plane. I always wanted a small one, so I started today to build myself an 1:21 high altitude version:
Wingspan 83 cm / 33''
Length 64 cm / 25,5 ''
Weight fuselage + wing (unfinished) 80 gr / 2,8 oz
Equipment: 85 gr / 2,9 oz
GWS Indoor motor, GWS RX, LiPo 2s, 350 mA, 5 gr servos

Do 335,

Looks good, please keep us posted on your progress. I hope I can get my fuse looking that good, but till then I am concentrating on getting my wings built, then everything else will fall into place, hopefully .

Looking at the 3 view again last night It looks like my wing root thickness is almost perfect @ 1.75" for a 40"wing, don't know how that happened! (lucky I guess). As with most things I build, I end up engineering as I go along, kinda backwards I know, but seems to work for me most of the time.

Also, from what I can tell using the 3 view I have, I will need about 3 degrees of dihedral, and will also have to angle my root rib so that when butted up against the other root rib of the other wing they will be flush at the correct dihdrl angle.

Unfortunately no progress last night as I had my son & I can't seem to get anything done when I have him, he's 2 years old & very demanding, kids these days, I tell ya See pic-try keeping this guy away from your build table, need to build a fence around the perimeter, but that probably wouldn't be enough either

Hi JP,

my two ladies (the younger one is 6 month old) visited my parents in law yesterday, so I had the time for building...
I'm not sure about the original dihedral.
The angle to the fuselage is quite high (see pic).
At the original plane the elevator angle could be changed +- 5°
(at 2,3,5,6).
I would prefer max. 2° dihedral from a fighter plane, but I'm not sure, so are there any experts around?

Dunno Mate you've picked some Heavy Bits there. Why the Huge Props or the 2100mah batts AND the 2.. 20 amp esc's Unecessary overkill imo. Identically wound outrunners work "fine' on 1 esc.
Foam (gasp! ) may not be the errr.. Lightest Choice..
as contest Balsa IS usually much lighter :-)

Although Have you checked out this Kid's Blog
https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/atta...mentid=1654732
Exquisite craftsmanship.. MUCH.. to learn there Study it all V carefully
I would be hard pressed equal his product and I've been 'doing this' for 40 years.

Hi Bare,

Yeah, I could probably shave 1/2-3/4 oz by using smaller ESC's, but I like to have overhead & they were cheap My ESC's & my motors cost the same- $16 each, from lightflightrc. Oh yeah, the reason for the big props, I like thrust
