It has been raining here for two days now. Now chance to get mine out and try yet. I did get my jib boom re-rigged last night and want to finish the main. No hurry, works fine now. Leaving this morning for the rest of the week, so no sailing for me unless I take my footy with me. I did pick up some 1/16 OD and ID copper rod yesterday. I will attempt to make a few more wind vanes until I get it the way I want. I will borrow a digital scale and let you know the weight. I am trying to keep really low. I have some ideas. Will post later. |

I believe that is a Tunisia flag, very similar to Turkey, but the star in the center instead of outside the circle is the clue.

Seeing the pix of old sailing ships , here is a little sailing trivia for the day. I recently found this photo of a very old ship. When I was a youngster it was related to me that ships like this gave us the terms port and starboard. Notice on the right side she has a large oar for steering instead of a rudder. That became the "steerboard" side which evolved over time and lanquage into starboard. Since they needed to use the steering to dock, the opposite side would be brought alongside the quay or port, that became the portside.
Believe it or not I was not there at the time but this is how it was related to me and it made sense. Mind you I don't even know if the language was even similar in that time, but I like the explanation. Bill |

Another option is to buy trim sheets from the local hobby shop and cut your own 1" widths. |

A Ship was beating back and forth to windward to gain it’s home port. The original commands were Starboard or Larboard. The wind got so loud no one could hear whether the command was starboard of larboard. At that time port was on the larboard side where everyone knew the ship was trying to get to. the Captain finally yelled out “Port”. Of course the Ship was reported to have been heading back to England with a shipment of Portuguese wine. So some say that the captain was nervous about all the confusion and yelled for some port wine to cool his nerves. Or maybe the wine was named “Port” in honor of the new ship command. I can’t tell you how much I had to consume before it all made sense to me. LOL What was the topic about here anyway? |
