An old trick to reduce radio interference is to ground all the moving metal bits. Perhaps that's why? I've never had a problem with the new high freq radios in the 2.4ghtz class (eg. Spektrum). But I've seen glitches with regular radios when running live steam locos.

I just ran the (-) wire from the 6V battery to the engine rather than another ground wire from each fixture back to the battery.
