The Piper XL has arrived!

Woooooo hooooooooo! The Piper XL from Mark Miller at Isthmus Models has arrived! Came today via Fed EX Ground, and the box was perfectly intact. Good job Fed Ex, especially for this time of year!

I promptly opened it up and examined the contents.... everything was very well packed with each component in its own foam "sleeve", and the box was filled with packing paper. Every part looks to be very well made and should fit together without any trouble. Was going to take some pics, but digi cam battery was totally dead....because some doofus left it on....

Pics to come, and lots of questions too. A sailplane of this type is new territory for me, so refraining from snickering at what may seem like obvious questions will be appreciated!

I have plenty of packing paper left over form the move. I paid for it I may as well get more use from it.

Can't wait to see your pictures and build. Will you do a build thread?

Cheers,

Mark

I think you are right Jurgen! I'm obligated now! Seriously, I am looking forward to doing a build log, but I think it will be more like an "assembly" log since there's not much building to do. Pictures coming tonight or tomorrow.... I promise!

BTW guys, In my new local club here in St. Louis we have a lot of very talented guys flying some new molded ships but this years overall winner in Unlimited flew a Piper XL. Just proves that you do not have to spend a lot to be competitive. The right plane with the right skill set and practice can win the day.

Here is a photo of the XL that was shipped to Windy. LVSoar's has purple tips.

It's that "skill set" thing that gives me trouble! Anyway, here are some pics as promised. The first one, with the model in the box, is just how it came, minus all the packing paper.

Rick, when you get yours, take a close look at the H stabs. They are NOT symmetrical. One side is curved more than the other and there is a little arrow on the inboard rib pointing to the up side. Make sure they go on the right way!

First questions....

Mark,

How far into the aft fuse section should the forward part go? And what kind of adhesive should I use to glue it in place?

Ballast tubes.... looks like they go into the molded area on the forward fuse piece. But how do you get the ballast slugs in and out? Can't quite figure this one out....

Elev & Rudder pushrods.... need recommendations! Also, how to fix them (or their outer tubes) securely inside the fuse??

Thanks in advance for your help!

Keep up the good work, this is REALLY going to help out in the assembling of the PXL.
She looks good right outta the box!

Piper XL in St. Louis

Hi all,

I flew the Piper XL in the majority (six of eight) of our club contests this year and won the Unlimited Class year-end title as Mark Miller mentioned. Please let me know if you have any questions or need any help with this plane and I'll do my best to answer.

Regards,
Chris

Hey Chris...........

Good to know we now have a "PXL expert" to hit up with our questions!

How about giving us your input on setting one up,(CG, throws, etc.) and your experience with it's flight characteristics?

Would like to hear ANY comments you have on this ship.
Thanks!
Rick
