YF-23 experimental VTEDF

This is a design I'm in the middle of developing.. it started out as an attempt to make Depron YF-23 that was simple to build (no shaping), had good aerobatic ability and still looked scale. I also didn't want to just make another profile design. So, I built a quick prototype to see how the airframe behaves and to dial in the CG. After a few minor tweaks I'm quite pleased with the performance. Video shows some high alpha tests trying to reduce wing wag. Gonna try a modified aileron design tomorrow which will hopefully help.

VT-EDF version build will start as soon as the aileron design is finalized. Power will be 2 Alfa fans with AC25/25 motors to keep things lite. Controls are coupled ailerons/elevons with vectored thrust. T to W won't be near as good as the proped version but will hopefully still have some punch.

But who knows....

Cool! I have been wondering what you would do to top your last one.
Will we get plans for the prop version?
Can't wait.

Man that looks really good. Very floaty....just had to push the envelope and break it.....

I'd love to build this with the prop as is. Do you have any plans?

Yeah, I can post plans for you guys... but let me finish tweaking it first.
Here is the near-final design for the EDF. Note the new ailerons with tip balancers which will hopefully reduce tip stalls and wagging.

Did you use some form of AD modeling to determine where to place the dog tooth and the size?

Great job with SW as well! I've got engineers on the 787 that know SW but mainly use CATIA.

Thanks, what do you mean by dog tooth?
I've seen a model of the entire AH-64 in CATIA - now THAT'S some serious modeling.

Wow man, you seriously have some of the best work. That thing flys so comfortable at all speeds and scenarios.

by any chance the edf that would be used is an edf55? i just totaled my gws a-10.
btw, i really like the f-14, so much i don't want to crash it......so it sits it's mty second one.
can't wait to build this one.

Smkn951 - I'm using Alfa fans which have a 2.4" (61mm) shroud OD (outer diameter of the fan housing). If the EDF55 has an OD that is 61mm or smaller then it would probably fit - you might have to wrap a 1mm Depron shim around it. I have chosen to run two fans instead of one because I am trying to maximize the fan area for thrust and better throttle response at low speed/ high alpha - I am less concerned with top speed. I'll know a lot more about what does or doesn't work in a few days....

Now go fly your 14! I've crashed mine quite a few times - it will take a good beating and recover nicely. Just keep a bottle of foam safe CA and kicker near by.

Thewz, the two teeth on the LE are balancing tabs for CG.
