Using Flightgear for UAV simulations

Hello,

I have been contemplating using Flightgear to similate UAV control algoirhtms. I was wondering where to find a tutorial, which would specially put the emphasis on this subject.
Any idea?

Thanks!

Hi,

I'm not aware of any tutorials available that are directed to this subject, but please feel free to post questions to the FlightGear developers mailing list. (And since FlightGear is an all volunteer project, if you do work through the process, you could be the first to write such a tutorial for the next person.) :-)

Curt.

Yes, we have covered that at DIY Drones, and have links to a tutorial:

Everyone who read the DeNardi paper on neural networks is aware of at least the autopilot.sourceforge.net simulator being used to test autopilot software. Not sure how good that method is at teaching the autopilot how to fly the real thing vs. how to overcome the nuances of the simulator.

Unfortunately most of the methods to train neural networks on the ground are heavily patented.

Hello,

I went back to this tutorial and even talked to its author. Unfortunately this does not cover what I would like to do with FlightGear.

Ideally I would like to embed my PID controller in FlightGear (replace FlightGear’s), that same PID controller I fly on my plane. There would be a wrapper that would provide sensor data and output to the actuators, a bridge between my PID and FlightGear. I would also modify an existing FlightGear airframe so it comes as close as possible to what my real plane does.

So far I haven’t found any paper that describes how to do this. I went through the FlightGear’s code but this is a bit abstract at the moment. I’ve seen a couple of PID classes but I am not sure how to modify them, how to use the sensor inputs and actuator outputs.

If anybody has any idea of how to do this, that would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Jean-Sebastien

Hello,

Thank you to you both for the links. While browsing the Albatros project (http://www.albatross-uav.org) I realized they are using another simulator called CRRCSim. I quoting the albatros project here: "The core CRRCsim simulation is performed by LaRCSim, and open source flight dynamics simulation engine developed at the LARC (NASA Langley Research Center). " They also make it like it's easy to use...

Has anybody used this yet?

Thanks!
