VK Cherokee Babe Help
Howdy all!!! I'm new to RC Groups and I was wondering if anyone here has built the old VK Cherokee Babe? I happened to find one but didn't think about the fact that older vintage kits didn't have much to offer in the way of instructions. I'm not the most experienced builder and I thought I might find some others that remember building this model or have recently finished one while I study the plans.
Thanks for any help anyone can provide! |

Howdy Slim,
It has been twnety + years since I built mine but I looked at the plans and saw a few things I would change, other than that if you have built two or three kits you should be able to get through the Babe without much trouble. If I were to build the kit I have I would change the 3/16" balsa spars to spruce and add .014" carbon fiber to both spars. I would use 3/16" shear webs all the way to the tip. The 1/32" splice plate for the two wing havles would be changed to 1/16" front and back extending to the outer R2 rib. I would make a sandwich of 1/16" plywood, 1/16" balsa and 1/16" plywood for the center shear brace out to the first R2 rib. These mods would not add much more than an ounce in weight but double the strenght of the wing. I would also use two servos for the ailerons, use a pull-pull for the rudder and move the elevator linkage inside the fuse. I might even get real fancy and add retracts but that is a lot of modifing and work. Joe |

Thanks for the input. I'll keep studying the plans and try to see things your way. At this point I'm still having some trouble with getting all the parts for the fuse laid out properly. I may be over my head but I'm not giving up yet. I think I'm going to post some specific questions in another day or so.

Well I didn't get much accomplished this weekend as far as kit building goes. I went to a hockey game and spent the night with a girlfriend so I can't complain but I'm kicking myself for not setting time aside for this.
I'm shopping for a new digital camera too so maybe this week I will pick one up and take some shots of my fuselage question areas. Thanks all and I'll post again in another day or two! |
