HET F-104 Starfighter

Hi all! Just received shipment of my new -RED- HET F-104. This is my first true EDF. I have been flying RC Aircraft for nearly 15 years, have always thought the F-104 was the best looking most amazing fighter ever produced... So I had to have one!!!

The reason I am starting this post is, I'm hoping as I start the build, gather the equipment to get this thing going, I can gain some suggestions from others that have built this awesome model, and I will also add pics. and feedback of my upcoming experience.

So, please feel free to add ANYTHING to this post in regards to the HET F-104, or even just chat about 104's in general would be cool!

So, to get things started...

Question #1! What is the best way to build a bungee/rail launcher for the HET F-104?! I have not a clue where to start here...

Go to www.warbirds-rc.com to see bungee pedals, ramps, and dollys you can build yourself, as well as a construction article on the F-104 model as well as others. You will find this in the "Research Center" area. Good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks Carl! I will check it out... Good stuff.

I will try to get things rolling here by discussing my choice of power system. This might end up a little controversial, but I will try to explain myself...

Motor: ARC-28-47-1 (From www.lightflightrc.com)
Speed Control: SP 60 Amp ESC (From www.lightflightrc.com)
Battery: Planning on using a Thunder Power 3850-3SX-TP-25C
-Yes, a 3s Battery!!
Fan Unit: HET 6904 fan

Here is my reasoning...

The ARC motor is a drop in replacement for the HET EDF 2W20 with one distinct advantage, greater KV/RPM's per Volt rating.

ARC's KV = 4250 (Approx. 47175 RPM's @ 11.1V)
HET 2W20's KV = 3350 (Approx. 49580 RPM's @ 14.8V)

Disadvantage: That's telling me I will lose approx. 2405 RPM's switching to the ARC motor and using a 3S battery.

Advantages: Weight! The F-104 will shed about 2.7 to 3.2 ounces AUW. Lighter wing loading = nicer flying F-104?! Cheaper battery packs!

I'm hoping to achieve similar performance as compared to the "Stock HET" set-up. Dave at www.lightflightrc.com is #1 in my book when it comes to customer service. He is excellent at answering all questions, stands behind his products, overall good person. Light Flight RC has a link to a thread containing much information about the ARC line, even a video of the (lighter) HET F-16 being flown on the power system I have chosen with AMAZING results.

One more thing, if I ever want to I can move up to a 4S pack / larger speed control... and have a ballistic RC F-104 if I so choose!!! (62,900 RPM's!!!)

So, all that said... Let me have it! What do you all think?

That's funny you showed that pic! I am converting my F-104 to look like that model/paint job! I have a friend currently working on the "Ferrari" decal for that tail... Should be cool.

I read a report that the tip tanks give the HET F-104 the "feel" that it has more wing area, can anyone confirm this?

Thanks! I was actually planning on NOT using the tanks... So I take it you have to treat the HET F-104 like and F-104? Fly fast!

Flyinghigh, That arc motor is VERY underated. I believe they say 500 watts? I know for a fact either quiet flyer or backyard flyer tested it in a wemotec minifan 480 (70mm) And they put out over 1400 watts but it came at a price of hi amp draw (over 100). So I'm sure it can support 5s and 6s also. It spun that fan at over 70,000 rpm's.
I'll check, it's in a back issue from late this summer.
My point is with that setup if you ever want more speed then you got it!!! Let me know how it flies. I have one thats gonna go in a het 609 fan in a skyray.

I will let you know how it turns out! Thanks for the input... After talking directly with Light Flight I feel you are correct that the 500w is a VERY concervative rating. I would like to start with an economy set-up, and see how that goes. And then if all goes well, I will upgrade to a 4S+ Lipo like you said and try to keep the wings on!
