I think the thrust loss can be reduced a bit by placing a 'hump' on the inside of the duct in front of the nozzels. The is a way to aerodynamically 'bend' the air flow. Auto manufacturers have used this to improve the airflow through the cylinderhead into the combustion chamber.

If you don't believe it, take a spoon and place it in a stream of water from the sink faucet and see what it does. Air is a fluid, just like water (from an engineering standpoint anyway)

It would take a bit of time to experiment with different sizes, shapes and placement of these 'humps' to find which would work best, but I think it would decrease the thrust loss noticeably.
