Robrotor, that's what the bend in one of the wires is meant to do? Try adjusting that first!

That might work. I've had to adjust the distance of the hole for the push rod from the center of the pivot.

The bend will adjust it but then it's off for the other swing positions. Probably need to do what Alpea41 did and change the position of one of the pushrods on the arm. Just adjusting the bend will change all three positions which is the problem I'm having. Robert

Figured out the uneven swing problem...I had drilled the holes on the servo plywood arm at different lenghts from the center. Made a new arm and CAREFULLY measured and drilled the holes and BINGO, even swing at all positions. Robert

Rudders


Banged the rudders together in a few hours. Pics as attached, with comments.

I used these ultra-thin servos from Hobby King. They're about 9mm thick.

I put a 6mmx0.5mm carbon fibre piece on the vertical stab to make it stiffer. It goes all the way along the vertical stab, through the deck, and continues down on the nacelles - see the pics.

The video shows the added stiffness from the CF and the rudders working.

The MDC F-14 has become one of my most reliable flyers. Hopefully with the rudders I'll be able to do fun things with it. Test flight is this weekend. Hope I can co-opt a camera man. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

Edit: last picture has words cut off. It should end "so the z-bend in the wire fits and there is no slop".

Edit 2: Forgot to add, additional weight is about 31g.

I've added rudders to a tohme F-22 and found they were real helpfull in slow speed hi alpha flight.

Yeah, I hope to do more interesting things with the MDC F-14 with the rudders. Even an ugly flat spin and a simple knife edge would be so great. Being able to steer while harriering is something I'd have to do once I learn how to harrier .

Depending on how it performs, I will then re-build the entire thing while trying to make it as light as possible. It wallows at over 600g. I want it about 100g lighter.

12 -14 oz is easily done - even I did it.

But you may have to give up the larger motor that a lot of guys use .

Of course at that weight it wont need to be so large and the lipo too.

Back in 2007-08 when we started this Mike and I were quite happy with the lighter built versions.

Welp, rudders induce so much roll coupling that I can barrel roll the F-14 almost as fast as I can aileron roll it with the wings swept back. My knife edge dreams are shattered. The coupling was so fast and severe that I'd spin out and couldn't hold the edge. Maybe someone with lots more experience and a good computer Tx mix.

Roll direction is in the direction of the rudder turn.

The only new thing it can do now is a wide flat "spin". Not exactly a spin because it's just corkscrewing in a flat attitude, but looks pretty interesting. Imagine the parachute maneouvre but instead of flying straight you are turning in a lazy corkscrew. Takes forever to come down.

The glide slope from the added weight was noticeably sharper.

Anyone have any ideas on Tx mixing?

It appears from your video that you have too much rudder movement. Take out about half of that and try pulling up to a 45 deg climb angle then roll into the knife edge and see just how much rudder will try to hold the nose up. It may take very little and that will induce less roll coupling, easier to adjust for with aileron. Just something to try.

The rotation over on it's back from knife edge is too much rudder input and is common with both flat foamies and balsa 3 ders .. In my experience ... A tohme F-22 and now a Twist 480 . The rudder turns it as if it were aileron.
