Glad you mentioned that motor, because I just ordered one. I was thinking about using one of my LSPP's but that would mean stripping it out of one of my other regularly used planes.

MAYBZ, you're right, it's the 28-05. and correct again on the throws, not quite close to touching as i am using 5g hxt servos and it came with short arms.
but i do have the 9 g coming this week, i also have the silver wonder 1700kv somewhere 'round here, would that be fine with 1800 20c 3cell lipo? i want to see this thing boogie.
btw. i may be addicted to the f-14 so far i counted 4 in the shed, 2 of your designs, 1 jetsets and 1 profile i just made up for aero ace gear.

good point i hadn't thought of that, should come in handy.

let us no how it goes with the auto sweep i'm stugglin getting to fly mine its either too dark or raining here

Just got back from a 2-pack lunch... two lipo packs that is. First flights with the variable sweep and whadya know.. it works! I could float along at 3ft off the deck then pull vertical and punch it and head straight up... and the wings took care of themselves. Still no issues with pitch or CG that I can detect. As I mentioned before, I still get some 'sweep lag' if I try to change sweep and high speed or high wing-loading... so with the vario I found I would sometimes need to wait for the plane to slow a bit before the wings would catch up with the throttle setting. But I found I spent most of my time flying with the switch in the vario position, so I think it's a keeper for me personally.

Also stumbled on a new 'maneuver'... I was playing around with stalls and found that dead stick with wings open and FULL up elevator she'd come straight down with wings perfectly level and perfect flat attitude. No porpoising or falling off on a wing... and I mean STRAIGHT down, it's amazing. It's like having a built-in parachute. So with the vario on I was making high speed approaches then killing the throttle and pulling back on the stick to bleed speed... then coming straight down nice and slow for a perfect 1-point landing in 5" of fresh snow... at which point I started making snow angles with the wings.

I would have shot some vid but my cameragirl is busy today. Bummer.

Anyway I'll try again tomorrow weather permitting.

ahhhhh, gotta change the motor now......this thing called WORK is getting in the way....
ithink i may have performed the same manuever but not by choice, kinda ran out of power way up and i had to do some weird stuff so it doesn't end up as a lawn dart.
ok ok gotta put on the blue wonder 1700 kv....

Do you think the sweep lag could be from a weak servo? It seems to me that sweeping the wings could take quite a bit of power. May want to try a stronger servo.

Yes, without question the problem is due to an underpowered servo. The HS-65 is the strongest micro-sized servo I have and I'm trying to keep things as light as possible, but there is plenty of room to upgrade to a HS-80 or something similar. Next one I build will probably have an HS-80 in it. I wish someone made a micro retract servo with extra low and slow gearing.. that would be the perfect solution.

Futaba computer radio

Would this work for high speed wing sweep?

I have a Futaba 6 ch computer radio. Flaps are controlled by a dial on ch 6, so if I use ch 6 for the swing wing I can set the wings to any position manually.

I can also slave ch 6 to the throttle. So with lots of expo on ch 6, I can have the wings sweep back automatically at higher throttle settings. I can also manually override using the ch 6 dial.

what radios to you guys use in order to these different things.
i have a futaba 4exa. can't quite decide on which SANTA would get me.....for the upgrade.

On the subject of servo's, in my example of your plan I am running one of these on the wing sweep :

Or the retract servo below will be a good option to.

I am yet to try the model as yet so cant comment on the power moving the wings in flight as yet, but it's light and powerful.

Which worked very well on a mini 3D heli.
As to a distributer in the US I dont know but maybe of interest to you for reference atleast.

I'm getting itchy fingers to try mine out, just waiting on a motor mount.

Thanks for the great info. That 150MGR looks like the ticket and with only a slight weight penalty. I'm going to order one from Allerc here in the US.

you will probably get many different answers to your question, but my personal suggestion is to ask Santa for a new Spektrum DX6i. I have not handled one yet, but it appears to have all of the same great features as the venerable DX7 but with a better price tag. It will take you a LONG time to outgrow this radio.

Simple Wng Sweep set-up

I am going to use my Hitec Neon with the fourth channel 3 position switch. This seems like an ideal low-budget set-up. The Switch allows a fourth channel with 3 positions for the servo, end-center-end. That correlates with open-mid-closed for wing position.

Whooo Hooo ! !

I finally maidened My F-14 swing wing !!!

Got two flights in before it started raining AGAIN !

Not a big deal I simply dialed in a smidge of up trim
ran up the throttle to about 2/3 and gave it toss from the canopy !

My AUW is just under 13 oz
using a Komodo 257 motor ( my special wind )
CC 18Tbird Esc and a 1250ma CSRC Lipo !
I'll toss in my flight recorder nex time out !
So I can lay a few more details on ya !

My HS81 wing swing servo is just about right
BUT it has plastic gears - THEY GOTTA GO !
Those solutions offered just above this post look
pretty tempting.
That waypoint 150MGR loks liek a good bet IMHO

Regardless, It flew as advertised. Plenty fast with wings back
and plenty of roll rate too !
It does nice Cuban 8's with wings I and OUT !

It's a little sluggish at HiAoA with the wings out !
It's much better at lower AoA and some more speed/power.
Yes I have LOTS OF THROW !

Pretty much just like Mike's Vids !

I was Worried about the Wings staying put !
Not anymore ! :-)))

Oh OH IF I had read about Mikes Parachute maneuver
before I'd gone flying I'd have tried that.
My Harpy does it "on command" .
I've even let it go to the ground ! ( on a dare )

If the F-14 does it too I'll be a happy camper ;>}

My collection just keeps growing.
Harpy, F-22, F-14, SU-37 and now mike is doing a YF-23 !

I gotta get more "gear" !!!
