Another thread about cheap LiPo batteries.......
Besides Thunderpower, who else makes a decent Lipo battery that won't break the bank?
Last winter I bought 5 new " DN " batteries, Four 2150's and one 1350, all 3 cell. These were about half the price of Thunderpowers and I was happy with the performance. I lost two of the bigger DN's in crashes where the battery was flung out of the model in wooded areas only to never be found. The other two are now weak and puffy from all the hard discharges I put on them in my Multiplex Funjet. I had 3 thunderpower 2100's, but two of them had gotten so weak they can't be used anymore, and I am in the process as I write this of destroying them so I can safely throw them away. I have 3 models in my fleet that need good higher C rated 2100 three cells, or even good 2100 4 cells.... I can't find the DN's anymore where I bought the last batch - readyheli.com - So what else is there to choose from? And where can I get a good deal? 75-80 bucks each for new Thunderpowers is tooooooooooo much!!!! |

I've had good luck with the 1200, 1800 and 2170 Flightpower 3S packs. Good voltage uinder load, fairly compact, and decent weight. They also have an new EVO LITE line that looks promising (drops to 17-18C continuous from 25C, but increased capacity at lower weight. I haven't tried them yet.
Flight Power EVOs are priced similar to TP, perhaps a couple of $ less |

BTW tower has some of the best customer service in the industry, I ordered 4 Futaba micro servos from them, they got crushed in shipping to the point that they all still worked fine, just the arms were broken(they used to come with a long X arm attached) I called and they sent me 4 more out, had them in a few days and I didnt have to send the damaged servos back! Used all 8 and never had any issues.
If you spend over $199 you get $20 off using a coupon code on their home page. Flightpower also has a 50% crash coverage warranty http://www.flightpowerusa.com/ Dylan |

2200mah 20C for $54.95 w/ free shipping. Great customer service and return policy. These are vislero cells. Vislero had a bad batch. The vendor did a recall and replaced all of his customers batteries. The bad batch were 15C cells. These look great. Although, I've only had them a couple days so not much longevity test though. Although the vendor has already proven he'll replace them if the cr@p out on you. Also the batteries have a temperature sensor label so you can see how hard you are cooking them. |

Keep the sources coming guys!
What ever happened to DN batteries? Were they bad batteries and now no one sells them anymore? What about Kong power? Their claims if true would make them the absolute best battery on the market at any price. And the Flightpowers I hear are good, but I am trying to avoid paying $75+ each for batteries. I want to order 4 more new 2100 -2300 3 cells and possibly one 4 cell of the same capacity. I just don't feel like spending hundreds of dollars for these.... My experience with the Thunderpowers tells me that even the best brand can have the same problems as the cheaper ones. |

To my knowledge none of the other size packs had similiar issues and they are still quite popular! Robert Garcia LiPoStuff.com |

All 4 of my DN Power 2S 900 mAh packs puffed up, two worse than the other two. About 25 cycles each, ~550mAh put back each time on a Cellpro 4S. Discharged to this level in about 8mins, so not worked mega hard. Trying to get them replaced...
I read of packs of all sorts of brands having problems. |

Thanks for the PM's . As I said in my reply, I'm trying to get Jun to replace them. I have sent them back at his request. Time will tell...
It seems to be a bit pot luck with some of the 'cheaper' packs, some seem to work fine & some not, sometimes from the same brand. I wonder if the cell make up gets changed now and again so some packs for person X work great, some other packs person Y bought, not so good. The customer never knows which 'version' they are getting, old or improved. Who knows. Vendors & manufacturers keep very quiet about what's going on 'behind the scenes' so to speak. I've had a Flightpower pack with problems too though & read of many faulty TP/FP packs, so it's not always just the cheaper brands. My year old cheap made in China bought off Ebay 3E 2200 3S 15C packs are still going great after many many runs in an EDF jet, pulling 1600mA out in 4 mins. They are the cheapest packs I bought. My Kokams are also running spot on too. Kokams are well though of & not cheap, 3E was the cheapest I could find at the time, all old packs & all working well still. Infact all my problem packs have been ones bought more recently, all my antique 10 & 15C packs are rock hard still with no puffing at all & work great. Maybe newer isn't always better... |

I read that the entire lithium-ion industry had problem cells earlier in '07 prompting recalls from United Hobbies, etc.
My packs from Don's RC puffed and Don asked me to return them as the manufacturer would replace them, so the problem seems to have been widespread. Better days ahead....for '08 several manu's will be putting out 25C and even 30C (continuous) rated cells. My thoughts are to go 4S, since several esc's are now rated higher than 3S and small BEC's are popping up everywhere. By going 4S and buying 25C rated cells, and using them at 20C or less, I hope to get much better life and performance from my packs, since the whole power system is only as good as the packs supplying it. https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...39#post8064379 Bill |
