Build Log

Chesapeake Bay Skipjack RC Model

A couple of friends and I have decided to build a couple of Skipjacks.

I have a old set of plans from a friend in Maryland that we will be using. They are from the Solomons Island Model Boat Club. The plans are so old they are yellow.

The garage is getting a fall cleanup this week then the build starts on the skipjack and a couple of springers for the kids.

If anybody has any photos, build experience, or suggestions that can help please post.

I never thought of flying the Maryland State flag on her. The skipjack is the official state boat. It will be the finishing touch... Thanks

The build finally got going tonight with the building board and cut outs of the frames.

We are building two in the club for now, maybe a third later.

We are using sheet of 1/2" MDF for the building boards.

Had to be carefull as the frames fit onto the cleats on diffent sides, so the 3/4" measure on the cleats is critical if you do not allow for any differences in sizes.

Tommorow I will cut out our frames and start getting ready for the chines and King Plank.

Does anybody have any suggestions on how to best attach the frames to the build board.

Glue works, but we want to re use the boards again later, plus the chance of pulling something loose when taking it off the board....

Another has suggested clamping the frames into place which seams like a decent choice.

Suggestion

You might look up boatbuilding (full scale) on th' web an' see how it was done in th' real-life yards, then duplicate th' method.

Wax paper over the plan. You can glue away and the glue won't stick to the board/plans. Clamp if you can or use pins to hold things in position while gluing if your board is soft enough to use pins.

You can screw the frames against square wood sticks, themselves screwed on your working board

Good night at the shop......

Started with getting the frames mounted to the build board. We are using the bottom up method of building.. I decided to pre-drill and then screw each frame to the board. I'm glad too... right after we got to looking at how tight the chines and king plank fit, we noticed I have some serious flairing to do on a few of the frames, so they need to be removed to complete this.

Then my building partner brought out the very nice stem pieces for the bow. Very nice job getting them cut right. After a hour of shop talk and discussing the flairing it was time to build and fit the transom jig to locate it to the correct position. Some very nice curves in this boat......

Well, we are at the point of some sanding and fitting of the chines, king planks, ect... more to follow so be sure to stay tuned.

Build night at the shop and the Skipjack starts to take shape.

After a short stop in the building to get some more details we have began to build again. This time with the added advice from a skipjack owner who has even worked on these boats and is building one from scratch as well.
