Fast warbird balsa kit/plans? 1:12 (1/2a) size.

A while back I posted the question about the search for a 1:12 scalefast warbird , at that time I pretty much decided on a GWS slope corsair - but timing was bad, it was out of stock at most of my normal sources and I let the quest drop.

Since then I have started build building more. Was wondering if anyone wanted to share their experiences with balsa war birds. My target is about 36" wingspread. Scratch built does not scare me that bad (abet it would be a first at vacuum forming for the cockpit.

i'm about 3/4 done with a jim ryan hellcat. his kits have been ably documented on this site, and they should be fast (designed for regular speed 400). he also makes a zero, hellcat, bearcat, and p-47.

Have you seen this one?
Laser Arts P-51

I have the kit but haven't had the time to build it yet. From everything I've seen and read about it, it flies really nice. The thread is about 158 pages now and some of the ones in there that people have built are just amazing. It comes with retracts and lots of them were modded with things like flaps and full sheeting and really look impressive.

I am considering the LA and a House of Balsa (based on threads I have read), but still open for additional options as well. The HOB is stand off scale (perhaps way off ), but might be a fun sport plane that looks scaleish.

Will look into the Ryan Aircraft threads as soon as I get the chance to.

Ditto. I have a Ryan Hellcat w/ Astro 020 6t(discontinued), very fast on 6X4 prop, only needs 2s.

and search the forums for S&B
very very tough and awesome flight performance, flies beautifuly. EPP fuse, balsa sheeted styro wing with hard wood leading edge. I have the FW190 on a Himax 2000KV and 6x4 and it is very quick but whisper quiet. One of the best flying warbirds I have ever seen. Had rough landings - no damage, dust of and go again. Expensive on first thought, cheap on the second.

Balsa Flies Better!
I find the House of Balsa stuff to be quite nice. It's a bit old school by the standards today, but in the 70s, these were wonderful kits. They fly very nicely on a Mega 16/15/5, 7.5 x 4, and 3s li-poly at around 22-23 amps. Do add a rudder, stall turns are much easier.

If you want to do a scratchbuild, check out Mark Rittinger's plans. He's got several balsa WWII warbirds at about 42" span and sells his plans. He's a member here, and I think his pseudonym is mrittinger.

Thomanie (also a member) did a really nice FW-190 at about 30" wingspan. He's got a build thread on it over in the scale electrics forum, and he sells the plans too.

Don't forget the www.Warbirdkits.com planes. I built the Yak 9 and is pretty fast balsa plane.
I have the LA-51 also and it is a flyer not a reno racer though.

Good luck
