Im flying the F-22 with the Grayson 2212-06 and it has rediculous power! Im guessing its goes about 55-60 mph. The only way I can safely go full throttle is straight up. Im using 20oz torque 9 gram Hextronic servos from Hobby City on my tailerons, and these do not have the power for the big tail surfaces! I was running a 5.5 x 4.5 prop and switched to a 6x4. Wow verticle greatly improved with virtually no speed difference! It seems that these flat plate foamies have an tremendous amount of drag, and take alot of power to go very fast. I would say go with the Grayson for speed, and if verticle is you goal, either motor with blast it out of site!! I would like to build one for speed sometime, you def need to make the tailerons smaller and remove the thrust vectoring tabs, in my opinion. You can easily develope tail surface flutter at full throttle!! These Tomhe designs are great!! Good luck with your F-22.

I use a Grayson with a 6X5.5 prop. My F-18 has true unlimited vertical with that, even with a heavy 2200 lipo on board!

How are you hinging your control surfaces? If you're using tape, are you taping both sides (top and bottom)? That should keep the surfaces from fluttering. At least, I've never had flutter on any of mine, and the F-18 simply screams.

Im actually using ca cloth hinges for all the control surfaces. I dont really trust hinge tape at these speeds. To be honest, I have not experienced flutter yet, but I do not have enough servo power; the plane hardly responds at full throttle straight and level, and Im afraid I would quickly induce flutter if I dont pull back the throttle. What kind of amps are you pulling with your 6x5.5 prop? My 6x4 is really heating up my motor and speed control.

I'll have to check the amp draw. I'm also at 1800' ASL, so that has a bearing on performance, as well as the extremely low humidity levels we have.

And I have no issues with control response at WOT. I use very tacky packing tape (the 2" wide variety) on the top hinge, and 3M sctoch tape underneath. Works well.

You want something that will turn a smaller prop at a higher RPM. Stay away from anything in the 900-1000Kv range. Best to go with something in the 2000-3000Kv range.

But it all depends on what type of performance you're looking for. I flew my original F-22 and Mig-29 on a Scorpion 2205-32 (1950Kv) with a 7X5 prop and they flew fine, but not all that fast. I then bumped up to a Grayson Park Jet 2212-06 motor (2200Kv) on a 6X5.5 prop and they are nice and fast.

i dont want fast, but i want manuverable, and quick turning, if i build the ful 100% version what prop will i have to use?
i have this cheapo motor lying around

That motor is way too small if you ask me. Maybe if you scale down the plans it might work.

I took my 2212-6 turning a 6x4 out and remounted a 2217-6 turning a 8x4. Dropped to a lower kv motor and bigger prop, but raw thrust is much greater. Acceleration is better, top speed is the same.

How did you get it to fit? I could barely get a 7" prop in there (had to cut the prop canyon almost to the verticals). Try a 6X5 or 6X5.5 on that 2212-6 motor. I love it.
