I think I can speak for two of the "Southern" C-J's (mine and my brother's when he gets her built) would be up for a road trip to Visalia for a friendly "low key" regatta with our mates to the North. Or if ya'll want to come down here we'll put something together (may take a bit to get all our boats built).
Sounds like fun!!! Kevin Canterbury J #551 |

SMYC Shop Report Jan 13, 2013
Yo Commodores!
Burrrr, a cold snap has hit California. We were down in the 20's last night, okay 29 but still the 20's.... From the groups emails during the week I could see it would be a shop day so I turned on the shop heater before heading to breakfast. When I got to the Holiday Inn, Garth, Rick and Richard were seated on one side of a long table. It looked like a review panel. They were smiling and waving so I figured I wasn't in too much trouble. Thankfully, Tim joined us shortly and rounded out our side of the table and made for a quorum. Tim said that he has the following two Mondays off and we might want to use one of them for a sail day at Lake Kaweah. So we talked about it and decided Jan 28th looked good. I'll fire an email off to our Three River guys and see if they can join us. We could probably bring up a chase boat just in case one is required. Rick found a hatch for Tim's Amen boat. Garth has been working on his Yamaha Around the world. Richard replaced his hs81 in his Victoria, it has been twitchy. I had put new sails on my ODOM this week. The old 180 sails had probably been on that boat 12 years or more, it was time. Richard and Rick are starting to look at putting a deck on Ricks Cj. I reported on getting the Cj from Commodore Ron, and how he brought it down to the shop in style in the back of an Olds 442. After breakfast we headed to a toasty shop. It was very unusual shop day because folks actually brought things to work on and fix. Rick brought his Soling 50 that he wants to get running again for the Lake. Garth brought his Yamaha Round the World keel. Garth wanted to add a 1/8" carbon rod stiffener inside the keel and get it epoxied. Tim worked on getting Wifi connected to Garths Ipad. So we had Rick sitting back and sanding in the easy chair getting his Soling 50 bow smooth and Garth at the bench testing out tools and getting right with it. He used the Dremel with a cutting bit and cut out plastic to allow for the stiffening rod. He marked and drilled a hole into the ballast to accept part of the rod. What fun. After everything was in place he took epoxy to everything and then filler to fill in the holes where the screws tie the keel halves. At the end of the day, Rick's Soling 50 looked good and Garth had a keel he could paint. I pulled a Soling 50 off the wall and we compared it to Ricks, and looked over an original 1974 manual for my other Soling 50. These boats seam so big and in fact they are massive. The Cj's seam so much small in comparison. I hope we can get Richard and Rick to post photos of the deck build on the Cj. I know the sub deck is on Ricks boat at this point so part of the job is done. The day went all to quickly and the guys headed home. This should be a fun year with some new boats getting on the water. I'm going to have to spend more time in the shop to keep up. As one friend would say "This hobby is too good not to share". Next Sunday temps outside are going to be almost 60, get ready. Rick ImagesView all Images in thread |

Manny,
It is good to have a stash in the sail locker, just in case you need one. The last set of sails have been on that boat since it was new, many many years ago. I've had replacement sails for it for 5 years or so waiting, just in case. I guess case came and I just put them on.

Soling 50's
SD,
Yes the Soling 50 is a good solid boat. Our southern cousins the Bakersfield boys got us into them, it is their fault. Chris had a buidling party at his house and a couple of our boats came from that day. I have another one in the shop that is a circa 197x something boat that came from another Bakersfield friend Gale. The manual I have with that boat was dated in 1974. So all totaled we have three Soling 50's, that I know of. I think these would be great boats for the Lake, as they are big boats and handle the wind well. Rick |

I agree completely with your assesment of the Soling 50.
The club here in San Diego races them as one of their classes. Great boats in my opinion. Keep up the good work guys it is looking good. Peace. |

Rick,
I think we have at least 3 down here that would like to come up and visit/play (that is when "our" boats all get built as well). Let's make this happen!!! Kevin Canterbury J #551 |

SMYC Pond tune up Jan 20, 2013
Yo Commodores!
Sunday morning and Tim and I showed up for breakfast and the tune up sail. Tomorrow we will sail again but this time with the club at Lake Kaweah. Today at breakfast we tried out new items on the menu today. Well Tim did. We got all caught up on news and talked about Willey sailing Robs Catalina 22 yesterday at Lake Kaweah. Over at the pond Tim and I had brought ODOM's. My 180 needed to be tested to make sure everything worked correctly with the new sails. Everything felt right. We had time to practice short course racing. Amazing how even ODOM's are. We took turns being ahead and catching up from behind. On one race I think Tim tacked 5 times trying to get around the mark. I drove straight to the mark and hit it... Arrrgh! Then went around doing a 360. Tim sailed past me then into a hole while I was playing ring around the roesey. I was able to catch up with him. Then his boat grabbed a puff and that was enough as the light air pushed him ahead then me before we got to the start finish. I know we had at least one photo finish where we couldn't tell who pulled it out. That is short course racing. As we are sailing the ODOM's we hear a voice from behind us saying, "you have a new club member". It was Dave. If you recall Dave is the guy that comes up in the VW and made the Blue boat he had carved out of a 2x6 or 8, and scrounged the radio system out of an rc car. He is eager to sail and play. Anyway Dave went to the Hobby Shop and ended up buying a Westway boat about 470cm long. The Westway boat had good sails and a drum winch. His transmitter was a bit unique where the ruder trim didn't trim. Other than that a cute boat and bigger than the footy. He like Gary was struggling with the how to mount a power switch. Tim and I recommended he try radio shack., I think I'm going to put in an order to Worth Marine this next week pick up chain plates, and Pelican hooks for the Canterbury J. Tim wanted 6 S hooks. Maybe I can get everything I need to rig the Canterbury and get going on it. It was good to be out in the warmer sun sailing. I'm anxious to see who shows up for breakfast tomorrow for the Lake Kaweah sail. I know Tim was going to be there. Who else? I put in an order to John B for a Club Sandwich from the Sub Shop. Did you look over the menu and let John know? I'll toss two ODOMs in the back of my truck for tomorrow. See ya at 9:30 for breakfast first. Rick |

Sierra MYC Lake Report Jan 21, 2013
Yo Commodores!
The truck is packed with two ODOM's and a Fairwind. I probably have room for 4 more Fairwinds and a couple IOMs and some Vics, but I have enough boats for today. We are heading to Lake Kaweah 2nd ramp after meeting up for breakfast. Looking forward to a great day. We should see Rick's Soling 50 return to the water today with it's dual 3801s. Garth and Tim will probably have ODOM's with them today and maybe some bigger boats. On the Lake we usually experience more wind pressure than we get on the pond so the ODOM's should do well. 9:30 Holiday Inn by the airport and there were Tim, Bill, Rick, Richard, Garth waiting at the table and ready for breakfast. Happy meals were soon to follow and conversations were going and it was hard to keep up. I think everyone was eager to sail Lake Kaweah today. But the conversation held as at the table. Sounds like Bill's wife Lorena got some good reports and things are looking up. Everyone was glad to hear that. Rick worked on his Soling 50 adding new sails. We had Cj's and ODOM's, and a Fairwind along with some Vics that were heading up today. So we adjourned for the trip to the lake. We got to the lake about 11am. John B had found a spot for us and had already set out a mark toward the wind. Very nice John. We pulled in most of the trucks next to the water forming a wind shelter for our chairs and boat setup. Boats were being pulled out setup and launched while chatting away and greeting were going on with John. The wind was up so lots of ODOMS were being pulled out. Richard chanced it with his Cj. Rick started setting up his Soling 50 which to my mind should rule the waves with sail area and plenty of beam. Rick had stayed up rigging and there is always a chance you forget something or don't tighten something enough. The constant wind at about 7-8 was great we sure enjoyed the wind pressure and everyone and rigged tight for the air. Tim launched his ODOM then came back and setup his Canterbury J. John B had a chance to try some different boats. I think he started off on Garths ODOM, then Richards Cj, then to one of my ODOM's and later in the day got to try a Fairwind. Garth decided he needed to get some hours on his new fishing license and took out a fly rod and did that while sailing his ODOM. I've never seen the technique of scaring a fish onto a fly with an ODOM. But that Garth was reeling them in, then sailing off to round up another one. I was thinking it was a casting technique but herding.... Cool! Folks took turns rafting up on the mark, and every once in a while beaching an ODOM for some shore time. Good thing Rick brought his tree trimming pool with extension. We could trim the main and push the boats back out and only got one foot wet each time. Ricks Soling 50 with dual Futaba 3801's ate it's way through his batteries and it was a bit of a scare when he said I have no Rudder while sailing out away from us. But the Transmitter over the head stand on one leg and pray stance seamed to work, and his boat turned back to our shore. Whewww. It is a dicey proposition sailing ODOM's with Canterbury J's. As the bow on the Canterbury J, to an ODOM owner sailing ahead has a striking resemblance to a high speed, flying can opener. So if you are rounding the mark ahead, be afraid. John B is a gracious host and he had brought lunch for everyone even a home made Pumpkin pie. A big THANK YOU JOHN! I'm not sure of all the ingredients in his Pumpkin pie, as he rattled off a long list of raw good for you ingredients but I' don't recall Pumpkin actually being one of them but it must have been. Again thanks John! We all had a great time. The strong winds of the morning faded in the after noon but we had food, friends and sailboats who could ask for more. Rick.
