Full size electric airplane

A friend of mine is involved with the development of a full size electric. Uses a brushless motor and Lipo batteries. Check out the press release!!

Here's a bit pulled from that press release:

Brushless DC cobalt motor technology has advanced significantly since 1994’s Flash Flight study, allowing the design team to now consider their use, however, just like before, a suitable brushless DC cobalt motor of this level of power output with an acceptable size and weight does not exist and can not be built and provided by a third party vendor without incurring unacceptable costs. As a result, the design team, in collaboration with Bob Boucher of Astro Flight, Inc., has designed and built a completely new AeroConversions motor.

This motor is the most powerful, lightest-weight, and efficient unit of this type ever produced. It is a 3 phase, 270 volt, 200 amp motor that will be over 90 percent efficient. It uses elegantly designed CNC machined anodized aluminum and nickel-plated steel parts in combination with “off the shelf” bearings, races, snap rings, magnets, etc.

The prototype AeroConversions motor is slightly larger than a 35 ounce coffee can and weighs approximately 50 pounds. The motor is a modular, scalable unit. The motor core’s design has modular sections that can be reduced to a lower-output, smaller motor (shortened in length), or added upon to make a larger motor with a higher power output.
(emphasis added)

This might explain why we haven't seen AstroBob here much lately .

The rest of the description of the power system (controller and battery) and how it will be handled sounds pretty familiar, too.

Wow! Think of what the world might be like now if the Wright Brothers had LiPo batteries and brushless motors!

To me the logical thing if you can't find a motor big enough for the job, use more than one.

Many moons ago when the price of brushless motors was just too much, some pretty big models were flown using two or four brushed motors mounted in a frame all driving a gear set or a toothed belt. I think someone even did what looked like a radial motor with the motors sticking out radially from a central gearbox.

Alternatively, why not multiple motors and propellers? similar to the Helios, (picture below), but with perhaps not quite so many motors, or quite that size.

Or are electric aircraft going the same way as the electric car?

Very cool, but where is he going to find a big enough ammo can to charge the batteries?

Just FYI, there is already a thread on this airplane on this same forum...

Boeing is already working on the Dimona EP project. Take offs are by lipo and cruising is with fuel cells. They say its just for trials and do not really expect mass production of EP planes to really take off (pun intended)

Uh oh, dont let the oil companies get wind of this. They'll find a way to kill it like they did the electric car.

Remember the EV1?

Electric cars suck. THAT'S why thy don't make them, yet. Hybrids don't live up to the hype either- a diesel VW outperforms them and lasts 3x longer.

Tesla all electric sports car, 0-60 in 4 seconds MGB GT V8 0-60 8 seconds.

Your probably right, I suppose electric model aircraft will never catch on either

just as a joke, I rember reading about the Tesla car on a slot car (1:24 / 1:32 scale forum). The motors for it were being wound by a slot car motor company. So it's fair than an rc plane company makes the motors for a real plane.
