Parkzone Micro Cessna: Life expectancy?


One of the biggest problems with these micro planes and copters is that the motors and batteries work hard and live short lives.

Assuming average treatment, how many flights do you think you can get out of this plane before it croaks?

What parts will go first? Has anyone had to replace/repair anything yet? How did it go?

well i dont know, but its really important to cycle teh battery for about 3-5 times, and brake in teh motor on lowthrottle/low voltage for about 7-10hours, that will give it longer life time and better performance

i was thinking about this too, its a very high price item and life expectancy/replacable parts should very well be considered.

ummmmm, 7-10 hours???

doesnt that seem a little overboard????


thats like 28 to 40 battery cycles run through it....

dude..if you break in a motor for 7-10 hours at any throttle it will be worn out!
I don't do any of that motor break in foolishness...take a few apart, you will see all this does is wear out the brushes!

you dont..you simply hack the old one out and find a suitable replacement..preferally one that is inexpensive..I have a stash of motors that come from toys, gliders flea market junk whatever...

Breaking in motors!...


I break in all my motors.. for about 5min "only", at low speed!....

Modfly:..is this a waste of time???...or am i really helping it out by not gunning it right off the bat!.....

What about brushless?....any reason to run it for a few minutes first, at low speed?

nope...waste of time...I have taken hundreds apart and inspected...no reason to break in...best thing to do is not let them get hot as this ruins the brushes...I know I'm gonna get a lot of flak over this..but as an electronic tech..I can tell you there is no good reason to "break in" an electric motor.

edit..ok now some of your larger DC motors with spring loader brush holders and feeds do require break in or seating..but not the motors we use in r\c..I laugh when I read of someone doing the "water break in" utterly useless and damaging to the motor at the very least!

if the motor is brushed with square carbon brushes and they aren't properly seated to the commutator the leading edge of the brush breaks down, forms brush dust which only helps to grind the comm down even more. slowly running the brushes in matches the radius of the comm to the brush and helps increase efficiency of the brushes. now, the small 380-550 size motors we use don't show great benefit from seating brushes the 1000-2000hp DC motors i normally deal with do!

yea..I'm referring to r\c motors not industrial grade 1,2khp motors..

Asked myself also about life expectancy:

-the frame is delicate, one hard crash and the wing or tail may be damaged heavily, but can be fixed easily. Also spare parts are available

-pagermotor: imho the most critical part. I have not too much confidence in them. From the xtwins (comparable size, comparable quality???) I know some die after minutes some after around 10-20 hours. For me the critical point of this plane. I startet in first flights with 1/2 throttle max., if it helps - I dont know.

-Rx : depends on its construction of servos (pagers, see above...) and the motors ESC. Anyone did some electronic tests? Hopefully its well designed (?).

-Lipo: is charged with around 3C, will last for some time (200 cycles?). Can be exchanged for rel. low money. Classic wearout part.

Experience and time will help, as no defects are reported up to now I am hoping for long fun with it, without fixing things.
