I find that using a covering iron is better for balsaloc than a heat gun, particularly at the edges...but you do tend to get it all over the sole of the iron, and then have to get it off with thinners.

Yes, sorry Mike - I didn't explain the situation well - it was more of an 'aside' really. I would normally use the iron but on this occasion was doing a repair and as usual doing it the 'quick' way when the result was somewhat rumpled.

My Dad had a similar if perhaps more judgemental refrain: "the lazy man takes the most pains" he'd say, as I did something lazy...

My friend has a sign on the wall by his desk:

"If it looks as though I've got nothing to do, that's because I did it right the first time."

For those of you who are fans of the Albatross like I am, this Sunday, on the travel channel, on a show called "killer rv upgrades" or something close to that, they are supposed to be featuring an Albatross, according to an e-bulletin I got from AOPA.

I see that **neons** has started building an Ivan's Martin Mars on this waterplanes thread. Whichever way you look at it, the mars is an ambitious build!

Hi John,
Nice to see someone else likes this plane. I got the plans late last year, but have no-where to build it at the moment due to house alterations and the Misses taking more and more of 'MY' room to 'store' her stuff in it. Grrrr

I think the Albatross is a lovely plane, the possibilities for paint schemes are pretty wide.

I look forward to seeing your build log, hope you do one,

David

Like an expectant father (well, sorta) I have been walking to the mailbox everyday since Ivan sent me an email saying the plans were in the mail. They came today, yippie! I of course rushed right into the garage, and started unfolding, and the first thing a noticed, I need a bigger workbench!

Once I get organized, I'll start a build thread, and probably ask many questions.

How about a few saw horses and 3/4" plywood? Many years ago I helped build a Fischer Flying Products FP 101 ultralight. That's what we used to build on. It was just like building a stick kit. Compare to a very large Sig Senior. Somewhere I've got few pics of the not yet completed plane.
One of these days I'm going to have to make a decision on a set of plans.
Good luck with your build.

Now that the Comet has flown and is more or less finished, I thought I would take a few group shots of my 'Ivan Fleet'.

Sealand (maiden 2007)
DH Rapide (maiden 2008)
DHC Chipmunk (maiden 2011)
DH Comet (maiden 2012)

My workbench is okay, but I do need a bigger room!

Awesome fleet trevor! Ahhh......and to have that kind of time on one's hands. My Sealand is still sitting on the bench. Won't happen for me until I retire.

Trevor, how well does the Sunderland fly? I suppose it is somewhat different than those single engine seaplanes such as the Ace Sea Master and others like it.
