Build Log

Curtiss Jenny -- at 60"

Well, after all these years, it's time to resurect the old Jenny and build a big one! The first design was at 42" for geared S-280, then it was enlarged to 68" for a belt drive 05 and 7 cells. The new version at 60" is an all new design, built around the RC Hotdeals low cost 1000KV Outrunner.

The good news is that even though it's a bit smaller then the 68" version, it's still IMAA legal for those who fly Big Birds, but it's still small, and light enough, to power with a "400 class" Outrunner on 2 cells.

Control will be 4 ch. R/C using 4 servos. The design is set up to use either pushrods or pull/pull cables to drive the rudder and elevator, or a combination of both. The ailerons will be driven with 1 servo each.

Meanwhile, the plans are done in parts in hand, so the only thing left to do now is build!

Beginning the Build

Building begins with the wings. The lower panels were done first, followed by the top. The ailerons will be framed into the panel and all the sanding and shaping done before they're seperated from the wing.

"Spirit of St. Louis" on today, on TCM. Lots of good Jenny footage, for inspiration! (Like anybody needed any, after looking at those structures)!

Whew! A new Pat Tritle build thread. I was beginning to suffer from serious withdrawal. Will this be a kit offered through your web site Pat? Or do we have to wait for a magazine to be published?

That should be a great one Pat, with a wing loading of about 5 oz. ???, she should really look the part when in the air, as well as when on Terra Firma!

I finished your 42" span Jenny this spring and have had some super flights on it when the wind is light. Looking forward to seeing your progress on this thread.

Always a fan of the larger electrics

3-D Jenny

Thanks guys,
I have to say my maiden with this plane was the most stressful one I've ever had. I REALLY overpowered it (one of the Hobby Lobby 400xt brushless with a 3-cell lipo ) and an elevator trim issue caused it to take off in about 2" and proceed to go straight up into two full loops with zero altitude and some nice hovers before i got it under control. Getting it back on the ground in one piece was one of the proudest moments in my short RC life.

I have since fixed my issues and it flies really nice (on a 2cell lipo)
