The slow boat from china finally arrived with my new motors. I went with the 1306 motors I linked above, with 4045 props, they get a little warm on a 2s battery. Even on 2s the plane can hover at 70% throttle, so more than enough throttle. I had to re-build the tail due to hanger rash, and we added some wing tape for color. I also used 3m super 77 for the first time to install some logos that we printed out on normal paper with our printer - something I'll certainly be doing more of in the future. If/when I wind up building another one, I'll be scaling the nose to be quite a bit longer - I'm not crazy about how the props are out further than the nose on this one.

I tried to take a movie with my cell phone - it's not too great, but shows it has plenty of power now. Flown by my 10 year old son, who is getting to be a better pilot than me.

Tiny twin funder and lightning plane flown by 10 year old. (0 min 29 sec)

Hi All,

With CV19 restrictions, I made myself a 4 axis hotwire cutter. I decided it was time to try it so I cut myself some cores for a new FnL. Just having fun with a bit of colour.

looks very nice. easy to see in the air

Lucky for you the CV19 restrictions weren't to bad over there as you kept things under control.
Not like here in Vic, went pear shaped big time.

In mine I have a 2212 1400 with an 8x4 and and a 2S it is very sedate and nice to fly.
put 3S in it and it is a real animal, straight goes ballistic.

Thanks TIMBOLOGIST,

Vic is doing well now, I lost my job because of CV19, no air travel, no work!

I built one when I first got back into the hobby, I had a midair with the first one. I was able to use everything from the original, I’m running a 9x 4 prop, 1200Kv motor on 3s.

I just wanted to try the hotwire cutter, since I already had the electronics, I went with the FnL

It is certainly a lot of fun to fly !

a 4 axis hot-wire must be an interesting thing to program.
or is there special software that deals with it.

My Lightning I usually take it with me whenever I go flying, I have 2 planes I always take. because I know they will behave.

No good about losing your job over CV19, hopefully things will get better soon.

Hi Tony,

I was inspired to do the 4 axis cutter after watching some videos by RC Keith and reading the thread in RCGroups.

I am the most non techy type person and I still managed to work my way through the information. All the programs are free and readily available.....If I can do it, anyone can do it!

If you are interested, here are some links for you

CG Inquiry

Nine years ago I built the original F&L, flew it once and put it away. I want to fly it again but Iím leary of the CG as I forgot to mark it on the wing. Iím guessing it was ~ 2Ē from the LE but I want to be sure. Can someone enlighten me to what it is?

Thanks...Dan

Hi HD Dan,

The first one I built was to plan and my CofG was right on the spar.

My new FnL, CoG is 5mm aft of the spar, I built the fuse about 25mm longer to compensate for the batteries I use.

I hope this helps

The main deck of the plane is coroplast, it's laminated with 1/4 insulation foam, there is a 4mm carbon tube buried in the KF step, the fuse is 1 inch insulation foam laminated with balsa on the nose, 1/8 ply motor mount.

This plane was finished as an airframe some time ago, I set it up with electronics and flew it in the spring but never recorded it. So here we are in the Fall better sorted. It flies nice, does everything its supposed to. There is a little too much current draw for the batteries. The esc, prop, and motor are a good combo but the batteries seem stressed since they come down warm if I push the plane too hard. I will cut back the timer so they aren't damaged. There is a bit of flex in the wings on a hard pull up or loop and the tail has a little flutter if you go too fast but it hasn't become unstable. The launch is dead straight at the angle it leaves my hand, at about half throttle, no torque twist from the big motor.

Well done. What thickness is your coroplast? Span? Flying weight?
Thank you!
