I was able to get everything but the cowl back together. Instead of a MAS 3blade, I put a 2 blade 10x8 on there. It's now pulling 295-300 watts.
I figure before I splurge for that darned cowl, I'll see how she flies now. |

Nice work on the Rhinoplasty, MJ would be proud ! Seriously, with a rebuild that came out that good, do ahead and get a new cowl. I've tried 3 times to walk away from the P-40 - but it just flies so darned well I can't seem to do it.
BTW, all of my crashes happend right at ground level, too. When I went to belly flopping, I quit bending motor shafts. When I quite trying to flare, I quite cartwheeling on landing. Now if I could get a spinner to balance, I would be quite happy with it. Be well JimNM |

Thanks, I sent an email to http://www.gwsprops.com/ to see if they could get it for less than Caliber. I haven't heard back yet. I'm sure I'll get one.......somewhere. I'm a glutton for punishment I guess. Now I just need to find someone that does fiberglass to strengthen this puppy.
I think I'm going to re-do the cowl attachment method - for a couple reasons. 1. I like the easy snap on/snap off. But it snaps off too easy on landings, then scratches and dings up the front of the plane when it slides up. 2. I lost all four of the male ended snaps on that last crash, and I don't want to spend $10 shipping for $.17 parts. |

This is an example of just one of the small changes GWS could implement to meet customer's needs instead of trying to mold the customer to GWS way of doing business. |

Hopefully you can see the trend here and fix it. With companies like E-flite and Horizon Hobby making so many ARF's at such a competitive price, no one wants to get GWS anymore. All they need to do is go to any local hobby store and pick up replacement parts for their E-flite or HH plane. Everything down to the smallest screw is available for those planes. Out of the three hobby stores in the valley, only one of them even carries a GWS gearbox/motormount. Other then props, no one stocks any GWS parts at all. Five or six years ago when I really got started in the hobby, I couldn't walk into the plane section without getting bombarded with spare wings, fuselages, cowls, canopies and the like. Now It's a rare sight just to see one single plane on the shelf (and that's not because they are selling so quickly). Something changed a couple years ago with GWS and how local hobby stores are getting their parts. My LHS's cant even order the parts I need. They can't find them on any of their distributors lists. Unless something changes, I'll throw the plane in the garbage before I will make an order from Caliber Hobby. I love my GWS planes, but it's starting to not be worth the hassle to get things for them. |

Assembly Complete
Well, with weather cooperating I should be able to maiden this baby on Monday . After a few flights I will decal it up and look for the three blade rubber insert so I can use the 3 blade spinner. I did some thinking and decided that it looks like I will not be able to use the 2200 mah Zippy battery that I have not because it won't fit in the batt bay, but because my ESC won't handle the output amps. I only have a 25 Amp ESC so it looks like I am going to use some 1300 mah batteries I have. The plane feels rather heavy and i am begining to wonder if I am going to need to run 3/4 or more throttle just to stay in the air with the stock BL motor. I guess I will find out then.

I totally agree with the price of caliber being to high..they must know that they monopolize the market on gws parts. however i am glad to know that parts are available. in the past i made the mistake of buying a plane with absolutely no support whatsoever..some gws parts can be found at BP hobbies, but they do not have p 40 parts...i think that gws is missing the boat on service. any shop or website selling gws ought to provide access to replacement parts..lets face it if you fly you'll crash, you are going to need parts...to me buying gws means, you don't mind building them, you already have electronics, and in my case you don't mind painting them and you appreciate having the choice of just buying the airframe or a kit with the motor..i love the epo kits, bigger better gws..gws must excel in that niche, gws fans are frugel and like to build, and for the most part dig on the warbirds....caliber please drop the shipping charge help us keep our gws warbirds flying in tip top. ALLERC HAS THE BEST PRICES ON THE EPO KITS, THEY ARE OUT OF ARIZONA, VERY QUICK SHIPPING,BUT NO PARTS..HEADSUPRC GREAT PRICES ON EVERYTHING I GET MOTORS AND ESC'S GREAT PRICES AND INFO, ALSO USUALLY 2 DOLLAR SHIPPING CHOOSE YOUR SHIPPING METHOD |

wish you the best of luck..what is your flying weight? just curious. is your motor the 2215? I would move the cg forward just a touch, i bet you'll want a new esc so you can run the bigger battery, just guessing. my p 40 is the heavier epo foam so i'm not sure, but i run a 2100 tp with a dubro spinner and a 3530 motor, i definitely prefer nose heavy, my auw is almost 31 oz.. OH by the way, i think that gws intends for you to cut the rubber spinner to fit. i do not think that there is a 3blade rubber spinner out there..my three blade gws spinner sits perfectly on the backplate of a 2 3/4 dubro spinner,no rubber spinner needed...good luck keep us posted.. |

I do have it balance a touch nose heavy. I don't have a scale to weigh it, but it feels a little heavy. I thought about getting a Dubro spinner for it, I bought one for a similar sized Scorpio FW-190 and it just feels heavy. I do want to use that bigger battery I just have this gut feeling it will be too heavy and I will have to use a larger ESC 35-40 amp. We shall see where it is at with what I have. Thanks and I will keep posted and try to get some photos as well.

Skywarp - using a different battery to keep your amps down to suit your esc is the wrong track to take, IMHO. The prop and motor combo will draw as much power as they need to spin at the speed they are designed to spin. By using a lesser battery that cannot maintain voltage (and hence wattage) requested by the motor, you are placing a lot of stress on the battery and it will suffer for it. When you buy a new 1300 mah battery that can pruduce the power needed, your esc will be the failure point.
Not trying to rain on your parade... good luck with the maiden. My EPS P-40 flies really well at 31 oz. with a 3s 2500 battery. JimNM JimNM |

Hi Denial15,
Thank you for your comments though they are much negative. I tried very hard to keep Caliber informed of the shipping issue but I could not turn down their policy. That's why I so stated on my post earlier. I'll discussing more about this problem with them. Hopefully, they could make some change on this hard issue. Hi Ryramz, Thank you for your words, please be reminded that Caliber has stocked most of GWS birds and their spare parts so far but they do not monopolize the market. Another dealers and LHS's could freely order the same with GWS USA or even GWS HQ. Chen |
