Pibros Twinn EDF-50 "My first EDF project"


A few day ago i received (from Aircraft world, Thanks David!) my first EDF-50's And yes when running them the first time the fans came loose. One should wear a safety helmet handling these 'babies'....... But after three nights of crafting i finished my first EDF project

An Pibros delta with two EDF-50 on his back.

Some details:

- Width 600mm (23.62 inch)
- Weight 289gr (8.67 oz)

The BIG question however is, Will this thing fly

Hello Appie,
it seems to be airworthy .
There are some cooling devices attached to the motor, are they custom made? Any information would be appreciated.

No they are standard items, they come with the impellers. They Look like the things they use for cooling transistors etc

Nice job Appie,

From the information you have given, it looks like you have just about a 1sq.ft of wing area, so about 9oz/sq.ft. of wing loading.

I'dd say it will fly, but not knowing what type and number of cells you are using, cant say about how much thrust you are going to get from that setup.

On a 7X720 NiMH pack, I have been able to get a little above 3 ozs of thrust with one EDF-50, but when I put two EDF-50s to the same battery pack I dont get 6+ ozs of thrust, its more like 5+.

What I am trying to say is, keep the flying fast and level and it should do fine. Avoid high angle of attack flying. Keep the momentum.

Please tell us about the flights, and do fly it, if you dont you'll never know.

Thrust


Hi Vipula,

I measured 31000 Rpm on each impeller how much thrust that will give

At the moment (shown in the picture) there is an LI-IOn pack (7.2V/1200mah) but i'm a bit concerned if they can provide the amps i need.

Maybe its better to change to Nicad's instead, but wich ones (the 500AR's are too heavy!)

I will keep you guys informed about the flying. The @#$% thing is however that the weather-forecast for this weekend is really BAD so i have to wait another week or so

Those cooling devices are "heat sinks" and are available from many places (Hobby Lobby, Todd's, Aeromicro I think). They are made specifically for the small GWS motors and need to be applied with heat sink paste to be most effective. This paste can be found at most electronics shops.

Looks Great! I'll be interested in a flight report.

BTW, One thing I noticed is that there is no inlet rings. They can add 20-30% more thrust w/o additional amps. I made one out of blue foam and it weighs next to nothing. Well worth the extra effort for the improved thrust. Mine took all of 10 minutes to make.

When I ran my two fans on Li-Ions (qualcom I believe about 830 mAh) the battery really started warming up. That was after a 30 sec run too. I am going to try 700 mAh AAA NmHd

Appie,

I would go with the 700 or 720 NiMH pack, 7 cells. I have not come accross a Li-Ion cell that can safely handle more than 4 amps. I hear the Li-Poly cells can do a lot better.

31000 is about 2.5ozs of thrust, if bothe were spinning at the same rpm when connected to the one cell then you would get about 5. On 7X720s one would spin at 39000, when you put two together the rpm dropps, because at the current draw the oltage to the fans also dropps.

Intake Rings


Hi Gary,

Doyou have any pics's and or spec's of the intake rings you're taking about. ?? I think its wise to put them on because 20-30% increase of performance is worth it............
