Good deal! We've got an gun/archery store here and they give me old CF arrows that are broken or custom cut wrong or whatever. I've got a bunch of almost full length arrows and the junior size work great for smaller planes. Don't be afraid to go ask for them. They're just going to throw them out anyway. Plus I've got a whole bag of 2" - 8" pieces to use for stuff. You can also split those arrows and pull strips off them to use like flat reinforcement for stuff. Just be careful when you work with them to wear a mask or not stir up the dust.... it's hazardous to your lungs like asbestos.

I just use a little razor saw to cut all that off. It has a very fine-tooth blade on it. Xacto and others make them. Hey, but struts will work too and I agree, it'll look cool. I'm SURE you'll find a way to make something work! Keep on keepin on!

First.
Ryan, I share your excitment and I'm so happy for your success. I have flown for years, many complicated planes, and the BB was a diversion to get back to something simple that would fly in the confines of my front yard/street. Can't believe how much fun it's been hot dogging, combating, night flying, testng different motors, some modifications............. may need to come back to earth, but not yet! Second: Griffindor. Keep up on your project. Skewers can be bonded together. try one of those little straws at McDonalds used to stir coffee, cut about a 1/2" to 1" section, glue two skewers on the end with straw as a coupler, wrap well and tight with some thread, out past both ends of the straw piece, and soak in a good quality glue like epoxy, CA, or whatever you have. Learn to scrounge, beg, lay hints, contractors, construction sites, retail stores, postal outlets, all have scrap foam they throw away. I started by begging some McDonalds breakfast trays. Meat trays, foam egg cartons, and take out containers work too. United States has so many sources of throw away mentality, you might never need to buy foam if you put on the inventors thinkng cap! You just make your plane to suit the material. I remember a pylon event in California where the one design plane to compete was similar to the BB. The whole plane had to be made with Foam takeout containers, bowls, or plates, all joints and construction were to use clear Scotch tape, spars and struts had to be soda straws. These were at the time GWS IPS 'A' motors, 9x7 props. Flew great, field repairs were Scotch tape, and could be done during a heat! Everyone had a blast! Something to think about anyway! Fred |

Update: This plane LOVES the gym! Could have handled a much smaller space, actually. I was making figure 8's with plenty of room to spare. Amazing how well a RET plane can turn.
My students have decided on their first planes. They are going to build the "Spitfire" and the "Sport-trainer" from Mikeysrc.com. Hopefully these aren't too hot for them to handle. I figure I'll let them get trained on the BB and RC Deskpilot, then we can move up to the mikeysrc models. We chose these planes because they seemed tough, easy to build, AND he's got step-by-step video instructions on his site (that was the clincher). What a superb thing to take some of the load off of me! |

200x300ft is probably OK. Be prepared to turn quickly. There is a video in post #1 of this thread: https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...68&postcount=1 |

Well it may have been that tony65x55's indoor venue was anything from a single court to one of those huge four or more basketball court sized gyms to an aircraft hanger.
Here's a sea story. I have been in an old blimp hanger down at Moffett Field in Mountain View, CA that would be a good venue for everything up to and including gliders. Back in the Navy days when I was in it I wouldn't be surprised if you could get a thermal in there if you got over the coffee mess area. Jack |

I could fly my 5oz BlazyBee in that same 50x75ft gym... but the wingloading was even less than the BB.
Hmmm, I should try another lightweight BB33 build to see if I can hit the 5oz mark. I have lots of 1/8" foam that I just finished slicing up... |
