Project DC-3

Well guys......

I dont post often....but do enjoy the information I have gleaned from these electronic pages!!! The wealth of knowlege shared by all of you is tremendous.
I would just like to share a success.....one project of mine that has been over 6 years in the making.....and today brought to a partial and succesful conclusion!!!
This DC3 is a Top Flight kit.......with flaps and the semi scale Robart retracts.....it is powered by two mega 22-20-2 motors in MEC gear boxes at 2.5 / 1 gearing.
Batteries are two Tanic 3s2p 4400 packs, in parrallel. Control is with two Castle PHX 60 controlers, and a Futaba 9z radio.
It is modeld after the AA Flagship Knoxville......permanently based now in the CR Smith Museum in DFW TX.

Todays maiden went well...but did have some set backs initially.......and due to the winds picking up in a direct xwind to our runway....forced only one flight for the day. Hopefully I will be able to spend more time with it this weekend, and explore flight characteristics of this plane........in the meantime, I hope u enjoy the pictures....

Thanks to Scott Hall for the photography today..........He has been a great flying buddy this past year!!

Also thanks to Randy Kohr at Dynamo Electrics for his knowlege and expertise, as well as Castle Creations for the great service and products.....

Darryl

Beautiful Plane Man!! Wow it turned out super nice!!

I didn't see the wingspan but seem to remember it from tower hobbies pages as being 6 ft wingspan?

Sounds First Class All the Way...if you have any other close ups? those would be appreciated too..

I am working on a DC-6 now and can see why it took so long for stick built..How did you like that Top Flight kit? I would be worried that they are generally heavy --but really only guessing--mainly because they were designed for gas --or are they actually pretty light overall??

I love those retracts--the whole Look of the plane is really outstanding--i can see why you would be extremely proud of it.

Thanks for the kind words guys! Nothing brings satisfaction more than appreciation by others!! Especially those in the hobby that realize the work that goes into a model.

Orpheus........
The cg is right where the plans called......I cant remember the numbers exactly.....but what did was build a slide in battery tray in the fuselage. I knew going in that the flight batteries would need to go in the fuse...so I built some rails in the nose. After getting everything set up....I also realized I would need some more nose weight.....so I also put the radio battery up there, too. I still had to add about 5 oz in the nose, to get the balance right.

Tim...
The Topflite kit was fine. The fuse is very light.......the only thing in there,(besides flight batteries) are 2 servos. (rudder and elevator) The rest of the guts are in the wing as u know. All up weight is around 10 pounds.....which I was really worried about......but after the flight......I neednt have been quite so worried. While it is not a floater.....it certainly slows down nicely enough for landings.
There were/are a few areas I would alter, if I did it over...but I doubt I do!

The wingspan is 84 inches.......barely fits in the back of my van!! Ill try to get some more pictures on line.

Really enjoyed those pictures. What a fine plane you have built! I flew in one once off a small gravel airstrip and would love to build one someday. (Though my dream would be a 50" laser cut interlocking kit.)

Hope you have many great flights, Steve

What a fantastic job you have done, often looked at that model when we had one in the LHS.
6 years ago the project would have been a real challenge, but wit the recent arrival of affordable brushless motors, esc's and lipo's. what a hoot, that must of made the project very achievable.

Keep up the good work, no, great work.

Welcome Large Electric Scale Modelers

Glad to see some larger electric scale modelers posting here. It seems that many on this forum are limited by funds, experience or lack of suitable flying fields and stick to smaller, lighter models. For some reason, modelers who build the larger, more complex and time consuming scale models haven't posted here in large numbers but you see their excellent models in the photo and video galleries. We can all learn from and be inspired by each other's projects, ideas and techniques.

Looks great Darryl. Are you going to bring her to to E-fly in out in Dekalb on May 20th? I met you there last year, I had the yellow Twin Otter, among other airplanes..

Hope to see it fly in person, soon!

Hi
I am interested to know, at what size is it considered to be a large electric.
