Rubber tire molding info

Any one know where I can find information regarding the construction of model car tires?

I have a 1/4 scale car project that I can not start until I find either a 1/4 scale tire on the market or find a way to construct my own. I am looking for a tire constructed like the 1/5 scale R/c car tires made by PMT.

Oh dear. Moulding rubber is a specialised thing indeed.

Especially for performance.

If its just for look good scale, you might get away with something hand made.

Only way I can think to do it is to make a male mould, then a pair of split females off it, coat the inside with silicone rubber, stuff in some foam cord, coat more silicone over the top and squidge the two halves together and pray.

Real tyres are made in heated moulds and have kevlar cords and wires inside them..

If you do it, I bet you will wish you hadn't.

I think this popular with U.K. modelers. Wasn't there an article in some magazine a good ten years ago, on how a U.K. based modeler made some German looking tires for an odd ratio airplane? Spent much of the multi-part article on how he did tricks on his lathe to make the odd tread.

Every so often I get to Tony at Unitracts. He tells me the article is long sold out, but it gets reprinted quite often. Much of the information pulled from a book telling how to make rubber parts for auto restorations. Same system apparently, but different materials.

I really appreciate the response. I found a 1/3 scale ferrari312pb in the large scale section of rcgroups where the modeler made his own tire molds. I wish I could find out more about the process. There are a lot of Vintage cars that would make good 1/5 or 1/4 scale rc cars (with a vintage tire). I have contacted PMT about making tires for me. It is the cost that worries me. If anyone comes across a good source in China please let me know. Thanks

Cyclenutt44 . . .

You need to purchase the two copies of "The Complete Car Modeller", #1 and #2, which are now being reprinted in paperback. It tells you to make the molds and cast a tire (tyre?) in rubber.

Go to the following web sites:

Be sure to look at the photos. The models are unbelievable!
