I've had two park jets that I initially built without rudders (including my Su-37) to save weight. They flew just fine that way, but I eventually retrofitted rudders into both because they are so nice to have for slow flying, for aerobatics, and for simply helping the model fly smoother. All depends on your preferences, though.

hey Wobisch your model is looking great. I'd go for selction number 2. Well that's what I plan on using anyhow. It should give you unlimited vertical along with lots of speed. I plan on useing 2 3x6x4.5 pusher and tractor props too. Dunno what that'll yield but we shall see.
S)O I have retired the first bird. Too much filler and not looking as pretty. Luckily a friend laser cut all the parts for me so I've alleviated that part of the build. At the moment I ham having a hard time programming my DX8 with all the mixes. Is there anyone on here who has done this successfully who could help me out here? I've tried following Steves mixes but I think our receivers are different and therefore channels are not corresponding. Big thanks in advance.
I have installed the canards and shaped the form the 3rd day now. I am not yet happy, will have to shape again a little...
Additionally I have installed some Balsa at the leading edges of the wings and rudders.
Canopy is not selfmade, fits perfect. Now I have to build the pilot and the instruments.
The more I think over I realize that I do not love the fact of flying without ailerons. Well then, I will try to fly without them but I could use them as flaps? Does it make sence to have flaps?
I had ailerons/flaps on both of mine. I also had one that I got from cmala a couple of years ago that was built exactly from the kit/specs. Based solely on these three models, here's my opinion on the control surfaces. Please remember these are only my opinions and your mileage may vary.
Flaps: didn't like what they did when deployed. While they remained programed in my Tx, I never really used them beyond some initial testing.
Ailerons: Must have. Made a huge difference in performance compared to the stock build. Can you say "Flat Spin"?
Rudders: I had two models with and one without. Not worth the trouble to install.
