Power wheels toy remote conversion


Hay I thought this would be fun for me and my son to do. Convert a toy electric ride on power wheels into an electric remote control vehicle.
Ok I don't know what size servo i will need for this. The truck has plastic wheels so not much resistants when turning. Also speed control. This is just something out of the ordanary to try and have funn doing it.

You may want a pretty heavy duty servo; I imagine you might even need two heavy duty servos if you're gonna put a kid in it. http://www.hobbypeople.net/gallery/759513.asp

as far as esc, you might be able to get an unlimited one, but it's expensive and I think you'll still run the risk of burning it up (if you put a kid in it). I would try a light switch dimmer (rated for 15amp @110v, it should be good for about 1500watts ~ 2hp) operated by a standard servo. Good Luck, give us a progress report.

A light dimmer would not work like you think. Light dimmers are designed to work on AC not DC.

As for the factory one, it's an on/off switch.

But wouldn't a riding lawnmower be ideal

Actually, it should work just fine. A simple dimmer switch is a rhostat, a potentiometer, or variable resistor (if you have an electrical store you could buy one in it's basic form). AC/DC won't make a bit of difference. It would only be an issue if the motor was an AC motor, which it is not. And I agree, the original on / off switch wouldn't be as classy as a variable speed set-up.

Still an ongoing project?


I just picked up a one seater power wheels pickup chassis, the kind with 2 batteries.

It seems like a perfect candidate for this conversion to RC.

Do you have any insight as to what you used? Normal relays for forward/reverse high/low?

What about steering? Have you figured out anything that will center?

Lots of questions!

I did a gas conversion a few years back. Nothing fancy, just a weedwacker motor on a mower differential.

I have an anxious 10y/o!
