Alert
MP-e goes up in flames!! Caution larger e-heli fliers
Hi guys,
I fly an MP myself and came across this in the German forums. This happened to a seasoned heli pilot who was using Konion cells (from Bosch power tools - similar to the A123 or e-molis) in his MP. He posted that he was flying after work and noticed that the heli was smoking and landed it within 4 seconds (his boss took the pictures). The first picture is only about 15 seconds from the time he saw the smoke. It happened really fast. Apparently the battery cover (shrink wrap) was worn down by the sharp edges of the carbon fiber frame and created a short and the frame was actually the part that was burning. I wasn't aware that CF can actually burn that fast. He later said that the battery was still operational. He was able to pull it out of the burning frame. I'm double checking all my sharp corners on my CF frame as well to make sure this doesn't happen to my birds. I feel for the guy, it's gotta be tough to watch such an awesome heli go up in flames. |

I agree, that's what they're talking about on the German forums now. What kind of fire extingisher to have on hand...
He's trying to put out the flames with "Apferlschorle" (apple juice and bubbly water mix). I gotta say his boss was super calm to be able to take those sharp photos! It sure wasn't his bird going up in flames. |

I shorted a pack on a CF heli with the male deans touching the frame. The spark was scary and the scorch on the frames made me take much more care. All i can say is thank goodness the packs were not flamable or else the fire ball would have been 3 times the size and unstopable.

Yikes! Sorry to see that, but on the upside, it was limited to just the heli, nothing else caught fire, and no one was hurt. Thanks for sharing and a real fire extinguisher will now always be included on my essentials list for flight gear.
I guess this gives new meaning to a flame job on the canopy! |

Alum would have caused the short too, but would not have burned. Funny how the little things are what get you sometimes.
We keep several FE at our field, be sure they are chemical rated! FB |

I saw a video on runryder a few years back of an XCell Gasser that caught fire and burned to a pile of ashes.
It was an aluminum frame BTW Fred and most of it was melted into a puddle The guy's wife was there with him when this happened and he screamed for her to go and grab the extinguisher. She did and he put the fire out using up the entire charge. In about 10 seconds the fire started right back up and finsihed it off. Really sad. I've had packs burst in flight before I guess I was just a little luckier than that guy. |

Wow!! That is very sad. A buddy of mine shorted one of this 10S batteries on his carbon fiber frame as well. It was only for a split second though so nothing got damaged. That made me sand away all the sharp (inner) edges of the Joker's battery cage to keep it from cutting into the shrink wrap and shorting the battery.
One more thing to worry about. Chachin.. |

Would have been impressive to see him keep flying as long as he could with it on fire Can you say shooting star? That is awful & it made me more aware of the location of my FE on my truck.

Looks like a great flying site, out over that valley etc. At least they had some other flying toys with them whcih might have eased the pain somewhat
Tach. |

I heard the Nitro is fairly flammable I bet a little digging would produce some pics of gassers doing the Night Rider impersonation!

The moli and a123 cells would not have caused that fire. |
