Build Log

** RAF SE5a - 32 inch! **

Well, the foamie contest kicked me into high gear and I decided to tackle a project I’ve been meaning to do for a few years – The Royal Aircraft Factory’s Scout Experimental 5a, better known as the SE5a.

This plane was one of the pre-eminent fighters of WWI and the terror of the German air forces. Unlike most of the fighter aircraft of WWI, the SE5a was actually easy to fly, minimizing pilot casualties from crashes, accidents that actually killed more WWI pilots than dogfights.

With the SE5a’s scale dihedral, I figured the plane was a natural for a simple rudder/elevator plane. I utilized a monobloc style of construction, similar to the one used on my Blu-Baby primary trainer. This method of construction has proved so light and strong that it has virtually become my standard method wherever applicable. The monobloc houses the motor mount, LG mount and battery bay and ensures straightness, strength and rigidity in the forward fuselage section.

Plans were done in TurboCad from a scale 3-view. They are available in DXF or PDF free of charge, for NON-COMMERCIAL USE ONLY. They will be posted in these forums ASAP.

Construction is all 6mm Blu-Core except for the monobloc, which uses a laminated sandwich of 1” pink foam and skinned Blu-Core. Wing struts are balsa and wing mount posts are 1/8” bamboo skewers. Lower wing support is bent bamboo slat from a window blind. Decals and pilot dude were printed on a bubble jet printer and cut out of the paper. Glues are Hot Melt, UHU, Gorilla Glue and 5 minute epoxy.

Enjoy!

Tony

Time for another motto!
It makes me hopeless for my own entry... Ah well, but yours can't fly off water.

I'll post the plans in a couple of days for you, as well as the parts templates. It should be great in EPP or Depron.

JelleB, wait'll you see the floats I'm building for it.... just kidding. I look forward to seeing your plane. I'm sure it's great!

Looks Fantastic Tony. Something about WW1 aircraft. The Magic is always there with them. As with the other fella's looking forward to plans.

Cool Tony!
I was itching to build a Swordfish after watching "Dogfights" in that episode about the Bismark on t.v., but I also almost bought a great planes SE5A from my LHS the other day.. I'd much rather build one... Good job! Looking forward to the plans. No pressure though.... LOL...

OK folks, after all the kind words... here you go. The plans are in PDF and the parts diagram is tiled. The plans are also available in CAD formats too. Just ask...Enjoy!

Airfoil is Gene Bonds 4-40 undercamber. It just looks right on this bird.

Now I really gotta get my butt in gear before one of you guys finishes the build before I do!

Tony

PS: Just added. Full page PDF Parts
