New Big Really Big SIG Rascal 110

The SIG Rascal just keeps getting bigger. Wing Span: 110". (9ft) Wing Area: 1522 sq. in. (10.57 sq. ft.) Length: 75-3/4" Flying weight: 11-13lbs. See the add in Model Airplane News page 101. Spoke with Scott of SIG MFG and says it's a spectacular plane and has the most fun with this plane. It should be available the second week of November. I have the Rascal 40 and sure is a fun plane to fly. Would like to get one, but with a MSRP of $400, it will be awhile. Is anyone else planning on purchasing this baby and possibly doing an "E" conversion? I'll bet Paul Martin will be the first to take this challenge.

from the size of that beast...I think a VW Bug engine ought to suffice.

I have no idea. I haven't done a project this big. Paul Martin has one on order. I'm sure he'll be going with a Maxcim power system.

We also have one on order. We were thinking of converting it to a tow plane for our large scale gliders. Put a Brison 3.2 gasser in it for that.
Having said that, I am also considering putting in a Astro 90 on a SB on 40 cells. that should be enough oomph to get that puppy airborne. It would need to swing a 24 in prop. I hope it has enough clearance.

Viewing the image, it looks like it's going to have a fiberglass cowl. Gas or electric, I can't wait to see someone fly this big bird.

Reply from Sig

Here is a reply that I got from Larry King at Sig in regard to the question when is it shipping? ( The Rascal 110) This reply came yesterday.

Dear Mr. Martin,

Thank you for your email message. The Rascal 110 ARF was indeed originally scheduled for delivery in October 2002, but due to a work stoppage on the west coast docks, it was delayed. The initial shipment is now on the water, and with the labor dispute resolved, you may expect to see it at your local hobby retailer early in December 2002.

We sincerely regret any inconvenience this may have casued you.

Best regards,
SIG Manufacturing Company

Arnel: You gotta get one of these things.....although....do you own a van big enough to haul it around?!?

You could fly it on a Hacker B50-18XL with 6:1 gearing and about 34 cells. With 1522 sq. inches of wing area, just about any large motor will power this thing well I think. It's designed for a 1.2-1.5 2-stroke....which is a huge, weedwhacker sized motor. With batteries, you will probably come in about the same weight as that massive motor and a big tankful of fuel.

I am looking forward to seeing yours crusing the skies over RSA soon!

- Ted
