To calculate the conversion factor, you start with the basic units.
ounces/yard to grams/meter
You would use this formula:
(ounces to grams)/(yard to meter)
You need to know this:
ounces to grams
yards to meters
1 ounce = 28.349523125 gram
1 yard = 0.9144 meter
ounce/yard * (28.349523125/0.9144) = gram/meter
Your conversion factor is 31.0034154910324, which we can just round to 31.
23.75 oz/yd * 31 = 736.25 g/m
simple answer is to multiply or divide by 34 depending on which way you are doing the conversion.

For those interested in the theory of units conversion from a retired physicist: (this would be a lot easier with real equations. If enough are interested, I could generate this in a pdf with those equations.)
No matter what we're converting, it all amounts to multiplying by the correct value of 1. The trick is to know what that is, and which way you go: divide or multiply.
Assuming you understand English and metric units, you can get get to anything by starting with some relationships that define the relationships between the two:
1 lb = 454 grams
(The physicist in me cringes: Pounds measure force, and grams measure mass. So, we'll all agree that we're talking about the force of gravity on 454 grams being one pound. I'll now step of the soapbox.)
1 in = 2.54 centimeters
The other thing to remember is DON'T FORGET THE UNTIS! Without them you can get lost.
So, let's convert oz/(yd*yd) to g/(m*m). As an example, I'll convert 1oz/yd^2 to gm/m^2
Since a pound is 16 ounces, we have 16 oz = 454 gms, or
1 = 454gms/16oz
So, 1oz/yd^2 = 1oz/yd^2*(454gm/16oz)
Now we note that:
1 yd = 36 inches, or
1 = 36in/yd
Adding that into the mix we get
2 oz/yd^2 = (1oz/yd^2*28.375gm/oz)/(36in/yd*36in/yd)
Finally, we need to convert square inches into square meters. Look at the definitions above, we see that
100in = 254cm = 2.54m (from 100cm = 1m)
or 1 = 100in/2.54m
So, 1oz/yd^2 = 1oz/yd^2*0.02189429gm-yd^2/in^2*(100in/2.54m*100/2.54m)
If we cancel out all the units, we get
1 oz/yd^2 - 33.93621gm/m^2 (Gee, that looks familiar)
Finally, we get our conversion factor:
1 = 33.93621(gm-m^2)/(oz/yd^2)
And now we see why units are important: If I want to convert oz/yd^2 to gm/m^2, I want the oz and yds to go away. If I multiply by my factor of
1 = 33.93621(gm-m^2)/(oz/yd^2)
the oz/yd^2 units cancel and I get the answer in gm/m^2. If I want to convert gm/m2 20 oz/yd^2, I divide and get the answer it oz/yd^2
Morale of the story: The statement "The conversion factor is 33.93621" doesn't have much meaning. What we want to say is "The conversion factor is 33.93621(gm-m^2)/(oz/yd^2)." That works.
